How in the Hells have I gotten myself into this state of affairs…
Seated at Imryll’s desk, Jaezred laces his fingers together as he stares down at the tome of witchcraft before him, open to a page bearing a list of six names. He is hesitating. Stalling for nothing. Waiting for that sickening feeling in the pit of his stomach to pass, but he knows it won’t.
He is plunging headfirst back into drow politics after everything that’s happened to him, but that’s not even the issue. Not remotely. The issue is Zola, willingly entering the system he had paid dearly to escape from and she had been fortunate enough to live without. She wants to be part of that abusive structure of power. And he is helping her get there.
However…as a servant of Queen Nicnevin, he has a duty to do everything he can to rescue the hags of Haspar Knoll. It does not matter how he feels about the job.
There’s no use in putting this off. He picks up the quill, selects a name from the list — Lira Menat — and begins writing a sending.
Salutations, Lady Lira. I hope the exotic foods business is doing well? I have a new proposition for House Menat. I think this would be of great interest to the house.
Word by word, a sentence in purple ink writes itself on the page.
Lord Jaezred, a pleasure. I cannot speak on behalf of the House, but I can, of course, relay a message. What do you have?
I have with me the long-lost but nonetheless true heir of House Rhomdaen. Matron Phaeva’s firstborn daughter. And she’s interested in reclaiming what has been denied from her.
There is a pause before Lira’s next reply appears.
If that is true, that is certainly interesting news. But what does this have to do with House Menat?
Lady Zola is in need of allies. She has a strong sense of honour and thus every intention of rewarding her friends, should her ascension to matronhood be successful. House Menat could have a constant and reliable voice of support in the chambers of governance — if they’d like one.
Intriguing. I take it she is keen to replace her mother sooner rather than later, presumably with resistance from both Phaeva and the current heir?
Indeed. We would be keen to arrange a meeting between Lady Bennathra and Lady Zola for further discussion, if the house is interested. I think you’d like her — she is an artist with the sword.
I will put the matter to Lady Bennathra later this evening, Lord Jaezred. Another surprising turn of events. Tell me if you would, where did you find this lost heir?
Believe it or not, we have been friends for over a year now. She has been living incognito this whole time, but I’ve grown to know her well. Trust me when I say that this alliance may yet bloom into a beautiful and terrifying flower.
Thank you for the information, then. I shall endeavour to set up a gardening meeting shortly.
Thank you, my lady. Red Knight watch over you.
