There are few in the Dawnlands who know anything at all about the Schira Sprawl, much less of their secretive ruling class. However, it seems Lady Tymora has deigned to smile upon Zola this tenday, sending to her table at Gossamer Threads a handful of people who work or had worked for Councillor Mavis Thovian’s diplomatic mission to Aeschira. As is typical of low-ranking government bureaucrats, they are easily plied with exotic teas, fancy cakes, and a whole lot of charm.
Daring Heights’ relationship is with House Menat, not House Rhomdaen, and thus what Zola learns about her birth family is scant beyond the basic facts:
House Rhomdaen is one of the 8 major noble families that rule the sprawl (“Seven, technically, since anyone has yet to fill the gap left by the extinction of House Shanmet,” one nasal-voiced aide says). They’re a fairly young house, having risen meteorically through the cutthroat ranks in the last century-and-a-half with successful expansions and ever-growing influence.
Each Aeschiran house has a specialism, a certain dominion that earns them their place in society. For Rhomdaen, it is stonework and construction, general goods, academic and arcane study. None of the things that are in Zola’s wheelhouse.
And finally, she is told that the matron mother of the house is one Matron Phaeva. Her heir and “only” daughter is a priestess of Lolth called Larynda.
These names bounce around in Zola’s head for the rest of the day. Larynda. Phaeva. Phaeva. Larynda.
Two sisters, both alike in dignity, one a sword dancer of Eilistraee and the other a priestess of Lolth. The tides of Fate can bring people to the strangest places. Phaeva has probably never told Larynda of the existence of her older sister; she had been raised her entire life as a precious only child… She’s probably not going to take this well.
And on the other side of this, Zola, too, was an only child of three loving mothers. She wonders how different things would be if they had grown up together, whether in Haspar Knoll or in Aeschira.
The people Zola spoke to seem to know that they’re not being the most useful and, in compensation, they throw around some names who could help her further: Councillor Mavis Thovian, Lord Jaezred Vandree (naturally), and Heret Velnnarul, a company man from Daring Heights.
Perhaps she ought to make some new friends before going to the family reunion of the century.
