Mittens kept running from the suddenly emerged doorway on the edge of Portal Plaza and didn’t look back. His chest aching, his ears ringing with the words he had feared he would one day hear but hoped he never would.
“Tut’owh…You held a fireball Mittens. It was an Illusion, that’s all.”
“B-but why bring bring me here then? Why go to all the bother.”
Mittens feet pounded instinctively down the cobblestones of Grave Road whilst in his head the figure of Miss Kennari sat on the bed stretched as she awoke from her disturbed sleep, barely acknowledging him as she spoke.
“It was a experiment…But...”
She gave an almost mockingly cat like yawn before turning her blank expressionless face towards him as she shrugged.
“…I got bored of you.”
Mittens skidded on his paws as he turned onto Raven Road, a horse drawn cart pulling out and almost colliding with him as he is skittered on the stones and caught himself on a forepaw. “Oi-watch it kid!” Yelled the angry cowled figure of the sullen faced hobgoblin driver as he pulled hard on the reigns to pull his whinnying horse back back under control, as the near collision and sudden loud rumble of thunder from the darkening clouds above spooked her.
Mittens pushed himself off the ground and kept moving along the short curving street toward the distant familiar shapes of the Raven Queen’s Shrine grounds as he relived his mumble of a response to Miss Kennari’s words.
“B-but I thought…Y-you told me I-I was special…”
Kennari’s once kindly grey eyes had been empty of sparkles of starlight as she stared back cold and uncaring at him from across the room.
“You’re just a child Mittens.”
Mittens feet swished through long grass still wet with rain from an earlier drenching till he reached the large flattened patch under a wide yew tree where he has spent countless hours learning Slyvan with his centaur teacher Violet.
“You won’t achieve anything…” Echo the final words from Miss Kennari before he finds himself wretched from the memory of that room and out into the cold quiet shrine grounds, the dark rain clouds still rumbling overhead.
He slumps down to the ground and silently as the first raindrops begin to fall he summons the hefty feathered and furred form of Levkoi to his lap…
“W-what are you doing?-I-is it raining?!-” The fey starts to protest and squirm, turning to snarl before before seeing the tears trickling from the young kitten’s eyes down over the golden streaks on his cheeks.“W-whats wrong?” Levkoi asks, their ferocity abating as they press up against Mittens' chest, whilst the sad repeated murmuring of the small tabaxi child is drowned out by the further rumbling of the clouds above as the heavens unleash their torrent.
“She wasn’t real. She wasn’t real. It wasn’t real..It wasn’t..real.”
