It was raining that evening, the kind of rain that sticks to the windows like a thousand tiny hands demanding shelter from the cruel world outside. Heret sat at his desk amongst stacks of bills, receipts and work orders on parchment that shifted and crinkled every time he moved like a soft wailing chorus of ghosts who wished they had been as financially sound as he. For his own part, Heret was watching those little hands of rain pounding on his window, lost in thought like any of the autumn leaves swirling in the wind scraping along the walls of the trading post in the darkness outside.
A knock on the door startled him out of whatever reverie had held him, and he turned to see that without even waiting for his acknowledgment, the silhouette of a woman was gliding into the room. As she stepped into view, the candlelight fell on her expensive dress first, the kind that told you loudly that this was a woman of refinement, distinguished and elegant - a woman of money - and far more quietly, but still audible to Heret's fashion senses, told you that she knew this, and this pricy exterior was a deliberate choice today. When the candlelight reached her eyes, however, there could be no doubt as to the lady's identity. Snake eyes - a sign of misfortune for sure, but whose?
The Lady Vermillion stood tall and proud before Heret's desk, and looked across at him with a smile that didn't quite reach her foreboding eyes. "Good evening, Mr Velnarrul. I apologise for the intrusion and for dropping in unannounced, but I didn't want anyone to catch wind of my approach to you and, I must admit, I didn't quite know where else to turn."
She sighed, and flopped down into a chair across from him like a marionette whose strings had just been severed. "There's been a murder, Heret. And I'm afraid to say I might be wrapped up in the whole thing. I need a detective, and you might just be the man for the job."
