Part 1
Mountain Born
I am Kavel. I am goliath - and a very impressive one at that. This is true.
My physique is exceptional. Truly amazing. Herculean does not begin to describe it. You see, with the training regimen of the Iron Strong Company, the training of the Metal Bros and their instruction in Stone Hand Fighting Techniques (a.k.a ‘Dwarven MMA) I have become an exceptional strong man. When you add in my time spent with Messikammen the super strong Bear King of Neuyeya too, and also my adventuring, not to mention my good upbringing from my parents, and my dedication to strength and conditioning; I now stand at the peak of humanoid physical conditioning. More impressively, I stand at the peak of the ‘powerful build’ humanoids’ physical conditioning. I think half-giant is no longer a fitting enough description of this goliath. Half-titan, maybe?
Give me anything that weighs 2,880lbs. Anything at all; I will lift it. Push, drag, lift; whatever. This is no joke. 3,000lbs is like sub-titan heavy! Give me an adult bison, hippo or giraffe; I’ll pick them up like they were babies.
Mountain Born in Love
I stand 7’5” tall. This is average for a goliath, but obviously very tall for a humanoid. My fiance, Nathalie, is around 2’ tall. This is actually quite tall for a sprite. She’s very athletic too. She is like goliath height, but for sprites. We are both impressive physical specimens. But, I’m sure you have noticed that despite both Nathalie and I being peak examples of physical might; there is a big size difference between us because of the differences between goliaths and sprites. This is not a problem for us though.
When I am in the Damphenite Tangle, where my fiance lives, her people have a special potion that shrinks tall humanoids to sprite height, and enables them to float gently down to the entrance of the Damphenite Tangle, which is located in a chasm. When I drink the potion, I shrink down to a height pretty equal to Nathalie. So, this is good, because it helps with intimacy and is important for sex. Good, athletic sex in our case, because, as I have mentioned, both me and Nathalie are a pair of physical specimens.
Nathalie and I, we fell in love, I dare say instantly. My love of Nathalie, It is - and I say a little surprisingly to me - a more important part of my life than strength is.
Mountain and Chasm as One
My love Nathalie Walnut and I used to have very special, magical bangles made from damphenite stone, an important material of her home. These bangles were a matching pair. They were a symbol of our romantic connection to each other, and we exchanged them as part of a ritual, much like a marriage. But, the bangles were more than a symbol of our romantic union, like rings are in a material plane marriage. The magical bangles bonded our souls together. Though Nathalie and I live in two different planes, the bangles connected us together, giving us a sense of each other’s presence, as if we were physically part of the other, one and the same. Across the planes, we could very much feel the other’s soul. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the bangles also afforded us the ability to travel what Nathalie’s people call the Spirit Road.
The Damphenite people are able to travel the Spirit Road because of their training as spiritual warriors, and the magical qualities of the damphenite stone. I myself would not choose to travel the Spirit Road; it’s very dangerous for the trained, let alone the untrained. But, with the bangles, Nathalie and I were able to safely travel the Spirit Road to be with each other, once a month, even though we were travelling to the other alone. The bangles and our connected souls somehow enabled us to travel the Spirit Road safely, but only during a full moon. Once a month was not much. But it was extraordinary that the bangles could provide this, and more importantly, the bangles connected mine and Nathalie’s souls in a way that no other lovers could experience.
The bangles, though, came with an unexpected cost. A cost Nathalie tried to pay alone.
A Test of Love’s Strength
Nathalie proposed the bonding ritual to me, and of course I accepted, and we bonded to each other with the bangles. But, Nathalie, and her second in command, Sterel were aware that Nathalie was playing around with ancient sprite magic that was not well mastered. Perhaps more crucially, no one knew what the effects of the bond would be like between a fae and non fae like myself, and what physical changes there could be.
Nathalie and I were bonded with the bangles for months. But, I did not notice any changes. I did not notice changes, because Nathalie was protecting me from the changes, by making sure all changes only affected her, and she did this in secret. My love, Nathalie, did not want me burdened with the consequences of the ritual bond she initiated. She felt all problems from the bond should be shouldered by her. But in addition, my love was afraid. She was afraid that if I found out the consequences of the changes she was undergoing, then I would suggest we would have to forgo the magical bond, which would mean forgoing our ability to planeshift to each other once a month. But, also foregoing the magical connection of our souls. And more heartbreakingly, as per the ritual, there was a devastating clause included about removing the bond - if we broke the bond, we would never be able to reconnect our souls, as they had been, ever again.
It was a deeply upsetting decision to make. But when Nathalie could no longer hide the changes from me, we had to have a very important, responsible, and ultimately very upsetting conversation about what we should do.
The changes Nathalie had undergone, as a by-product of the poorly understood ritual bond between a fae and non fae, was that Nathalie began to gain goliath physical traits. The last time I saw Nathalie, she was unable to hide the consequences of our spiritual bond. I think partially, this was because of my unexpected visit to the Tangle, but also the strain of taking all the magical changes on herself was catching up to her. Not just physical changes though. There seemed to be spiritual changes as well.
Nathalie is the spiritual leader of the Damphenite Tangle, and when I turned up in the Tangle by surprise, she had grown a whole foot taller and was towering over all the other sprites. It eventually became apparent that her ability to travel the Spirit Road had been affected too. It could have been argued at the time, for a very particular point, that her magical connection to me was actually a boon for the Summer Court, if not the Feywild itself. However, she barely fit into any part of the Tangle with her new height, and it was hard for her to lead the damphenite sprites, if she couldn’t be in the same room as her people, nor could she reliably travel the spirit road without the strange surges of power she experienced when touching the damphenite rock - which was a consequence of taking on my mountain-born traits. These traits were not only affecting her life by putting her reliability as leader in question, but they were dangerous to her too.
For Nathalie’s people, for her life in the Tangle, for her responsibilities, the cause of her dangerous changes had to stop. Nathalie had gone above and beyond proving her love and devotion to me by taking on all the adverse effects of our unstable soul bond herself.
When my sister Sorrel, along with Sterel helped me understand what was going on, it was my responsibility, and it was my time to prove to Nathalie my love too. I could not allow her to shoulder so many changes that were jeopardising her life in the Tangle, and her duties, all for our love. It was my duty to her, to help her accept the painful truth. The special soul bond of ours had to stop, and by its own magical rules; we would never be able to have it back.
It was a small moment of happiness during the painful sadness of breaking our magical bond - I proposed to Nathalie. We exchanged rings, which luckily for me, I had a fairy woven daisy ring from my early adventures that I was able to give to Nathalie. She in return fastened a ring from her hair for me. The moment of joy, it did something to soften the pain of breaking the soul bond’s irreversible permanence. It could never replace the soul bond. But, the marriage proposal and what we shared, and how we stayed by each other while Nathalie’s physical changes began to reverse; these experiences managed to strengthen our love for each other.
The Challenge of Trying to Live on Two Planes
It had been five months since Nathalie and I had been without means to see each other, and without the soul bond.
Sterel was working hard on trying to find a safe, and suitable alternative to our bangles, for me and Nathalie to be together.
Most adventurers' journeys to another plane involve two things; planeshifting, which often costs gold, and companionship for protection.
To planeshift, most adventurers, including me, would have to use the portal in the centre of Daring Heights, and pay for the cost of planeshifting to the magical attendant on duty. The cost is usually paid by the adventurer leading the excursion, or if the group was hired, then the cost is usually paid for by the person hiring the adventurers.
Of course, travelling to another plane involves travelling as a group, not just because adventuring jobs usually require the force of numbers (physical and magical numbers). But also, it affords protection for the party members, because travelling alone is dangerous - even in the Dawnlands, outside of the safe zones, even for top-tier, seasoned adventurers, and half-titans like myself.
However, despite the danger of travel, with the fortune of wealth I had amassed as a seasoned adventurer, it was not beyond my means to pay for an adventuring group to accompany me to the Feywild, so I could be with my fiance. Some of my adventuring friends can actually perform the Planeshift spell themselves. Some also (often the same, multi-talented magic users) can cast the Sending spell, without stones like Nathalie and I have. So, there was a way in which I could see Nathalie. It would dent, and eventually deplete my wealth, if I chose not to stay permanently in the Tangle, and instead just stayed for extended periods. But, I would see Nathalie. And yet, it would mean being less able to defend my home of the Dawnlands, and also mean less time returning to Iron Mountain in Waterdeep to see my parents - they too should see Nathalie and their son.
So, despite having a respectable fortune, I did not have a solution to seeing Nathalie that satisfied all desires and living arrangements. It was tough. A wise person once said, “there are no solutions, only compromise and trade-offs,” and it’s true, yes even for sub-titans. But, I could not see a compromise that would be perfect. Nor could Nathalie. She loves me, and wants to see me more often too, but she would not be happy with me not having my life in the Dawnlands as a trade-off for being able to live with her.
An Important Sending Message
Nathalie and I use our Sending Stones everyday to speak, and hear each other's voice. It was something, and I always looked forward to hearing my love’s voice, both if I initiated the Sending spell, or if she did. Hearing Nathalie’s voice each day is the happiest few seconds of each of my days.
One day, the best Sending message Nathalie had ever sent came to me.
“Sterel has done it!”
“She spoke to the Queen and –”
“Gather friends, come to Summer. This is our chance, Kavel. Let’s take it.”
“Love you!”
