In this life, some people draw a short straw at birth; Code grabbed a first-full of them.
The life of a traveling circus attraction filled most of her childhood. According to the ringmaster, she was abandoned at his doorstep just a few days old. She has no way to verify this version of the events, but it seemed plausible; who would want to take care of an albino tiefling? Her paper-white skin and metallic grey eyes attracted many curious looks or superstitious fears, but not many friends. She was paraded at fairs as the horrifying "Snow Daemon Child", and referred by the same name on the backstage.
When she reached 10 years old, the circus visited the bustling city of Blackbrook, in Faerûn. The calling of the busy streets was too strong, and Code fled.
While living on the streets through begging and the occasional food stealing, she bumped into Urirakir, a member of a local thief's guild. Code took a liking to Urirakir almost immediately, he was a tiefling just like her, but he walked tall and proud. Taking her under his wing, he taught her everything he knew, including how to live by "The Code", a clear set of laws which regulates the underbelly of society. Urirakir and The Code finally brought the much desired structure and direction to the young tiefling's life, and thus, she adopted it as her new name.
Urirakir eventually left his old guild along with his most competent companions (Code included), and founded a very secretive organisation known only as "The Hourglass". Strict discipline and discretion made them the most efficient assassins in the region.
Word of their feats traveled only through whispers, which eventually reached the ear of Brin Grerdorsk, the brother of the ruler of Blackbrook: Baron Lennart Grerdorsk. Brin sought to have his brother killed before his new sister-in-law gave birth to an heir. The job was tricky, but very well paid, so the Hourglass accepted it.
Code was chosen to be part of the team which carried out the assassination, driving the blade through the Baron's heart herself. However, upon returning to the Hourglass' hideout, she realized that Brin Grerdorsk had no intention to pay for the job.
Lacking his brother's popularity, Brin desperately needed to consolidate power. He bribed Urirakir's right hand, Nephmir, with lands and titles, so that we would sell out his companions to the city guard.
The new Baron of Blackbrook, Brin Grerdorsk, accused his sister-in-law of hiring the Hourglass to kill his brother and attempting to destroy the legacy of the Grerdorsk family, by bringing Blackbrook under her family's influence. The executions were swift; Lennart Grerdorsk's wife was hanged with almost all the members of the Hourglass. Code was able to escape before being captured, and Lord Nephmir was able to retire comfortably in his new mansion.
Breaking a contract and betraying your companions are both grave offences to The Code. Blood must be spilled to rectify these deeds.
Fleeing the authorities, Code made her way to Kantas. Punishment will be carried out, as soon as she is ready for the task.
