A leather bound book with a green spine is opened, pulled from a stack of three nearly identical books but with blue, purple and red.
Today I set off with Boosya, Ruthenia, Lilia and Blessed. All new faces to me and Velek. Boosya and Blessed were bright and glowing where Ruthenia and Lilia were dark and gothic, quite an opposing group really. I guess Velek sits in the middle somewhat, though his favourite black leather jacket might put him with Ruthenia and Lilia more.
Anyway, the mission. We were employed by a Kassandra Farcleaver to help in Kul Goran. Something going on in the far eastern part of the country called Jar Numar. She said a few villages had reported stolen corpses from graveyards and missing people, only for those missing people to eventually turn up with bodies ‘broken oddly’ (her words not mine).
She wouldn’t be coming with us, apparently there’s a full blown civil war that needs her attention. So we just need to find out who and why while she's busy fighting a war, there truly is no rest for people here.
So off we go, teleported by Jenna with Boosya’s cake in hand, and after some stilted conversation starters we eventually found ourselves in the graveyard with Watcher Stronghorn escorting us to see Horro Longhorn of the graveyard’s temple to Milil. From them we learned the bodies had duo puncture wounds on their necks and their blood fully drained, it was obviously vampires plaguing these villages. But what was odd was why they were stealing corpses? Hallowed ground stops them from being raised, so what use did they have?
Well once Watcher Stronghorn left, all those questions were answered very quickly. Turns out Horro had been skimping out on his holy duties to re-hallow the grounds after a country wide infernal ritual wiped it. Well now everyone was feeling the consequences of his damn actions.
No time like the present, we scooted his ass outside and he got to casting it while we protected him from the likely corpse stealers of the night. And they certainly showed up once the sun went down, groups of minotaur skeletons and vampire spawn, the whole show really.
There were a few scary moments, managed to stop Lilia getting her life force siphoned thankfully, but we took them down (and the retreating vampire mist) soon enough. But they had to have come from somewhere, and so we left Horro with his chanting to find out.
Eventually we found this keep, Stillheart Keep I think it was called, and with some scouting from Lilia we found two more vampires inside. She came back to tell us this after being spotted, and was promptly followed by the two of them. Luckily they both seemed more interested in talking than attacking. One was an elvish man with shaggy black hair and wings (Archie) and the other an elvish woman with long black hair holding a wine glass definitely filled with blood (Verity). We’d encountered the Burdock siblings, and they wanted us to send a message to the adventuring community that they would wait there happily for someone to turn up and try and take them down. What an interestingly arrogant duo.
At least they offered some immortality too, it was easy to see that Blessed was definitely considering, but the others dragged her away pretty quick. And I would have wanted to chat more, until they started talking about delicious blood types. I wasn’t about to have everything revealed just because of some blood lusty vampires.
Blessed Sent to ask for Jenna’s magic to help get us back, and soon enough we all had our feet back on the grounds of Fort Ettin. I got my reward and left promptly, Ninnoc needed to go pick up some components and I wanted to get there before the shop closed early.
Before I left Ruthenia offered some guidance on her way of magic. I would have liked to have learnt more of her proficiency in necromancy, a small walking corpse army seems damn cool, but Velek is squeamish so there’s no way hecould can cope with being round the softly undead corpses for too long.
That’s another thing I didn’t predict about moving here, how friendly everyone is, how eager they are to offer their help. How long can I keep refusing before people suspect? Perhaps they already do.
Velek stands up from the writing desk in the empty apartment, the sun’s light has long since dimmed behind the horizon, and the darkness somehow echoes the quiet around him. Eventually he moves to stand in front of the floor length mirror in the corner of the bedroom. At first Velek stares back but soon a shift of flesh occurs, quick and silent. Velek doesn’t look back anymore, clothes hanging loose on their frame, tired eyes avert quickly from the face they see now. They curl up under the sheets of the nearby bed to sleep in the deathly quiet space.
