"Well, I must say, on balance we've had a pretty good day, what say you Delenarr?"
"While I must admit the taste of hot, fresh blood and meat in my maw was more than welcome, I am certainly left wanting."
"Yes, that suit of armour was something else, wasn't it?" Alphonse mused, milling about his regular room in the Gilded Mirror. The pile of assorted things in the middle that Delenarr took his seat upon had grown somewhat in recent weeks, and in addition to the gold had within a couple of weapons, a potion and a box of buttons. "But at the end of the day, I didn't have much practical use for it. Too bulky, and I don't quite thing rose is my colour. No, it was much more an apt prize for fair Daphne. A beautiful swordmaiden deserves beautiful armour to match, no?"
"Ugh, keep it in your trousers, boy. That Cassianne was more interesting in any case. Neither a child of Bahamut nor our divine mother Tiamat, a curiosity indeed... and that little whelp by her side was amusing."
"That so? I mean, she too was an adept warrior, though you're right, there's definitely more going on there. In any case, a charming and pleasant lady, even if that group hug she initiated was, well, punishing. I prefer my moments to be without the risk of me slipping a disc. You could have joined that by the way, you're making us look real bad, you know."
"I am not about to partake in your feeble pleasantries. I am what I am; I have no need to present myself as anything else. That is a privilege of the mighty, you understand? Besides, if you want to talk about looking bad, consider your maneuver with the crab."
"Okay look, I didn't know that the pig things were going to eat it okay! Besides I didn't think that Jax would be attached to the crab, I mean come on, it's a crab! And spare a thought to me, who was in that crab's mind when it was eaten! You don't think that was traumatic for me.
"Wouldn't know, as a rule I try not to be eaten." Delenarr drawled.
"Yeah, yeah. And what of the mushroom man himself, Thurgor? I have to say, that mushroom growing out of his collar doesn't seem particularly healthy, but what do I know? He reminds me of the druid I learnt magic from once, although I don't know if that's just a druid thing, you know? Quiet, asocial types, aren't they?"
"I wouldn't have taken you for someone who fraternises with the Old Religion bores. And I wouldn't have taken them to think that you had the temperament for their magic either."
"Well I did say I learnt, not that he taught me. I just stuck around long enough that I picked up a couple of tricks, and he tolerated me because driving me away was more trouble than it was worth. I never learnt how to use druid wands though, so now I have to carry this pouch of random crap on me all the time. Anyway, with all the mushroom talk I really was hoping that we would find some fine produce, some truffles, a bit of chicken-of-the-forest, some chanterelles. We could have had an exquisite risotto courtesy of the chefs downstairs, but alas, it just happened to be weird fungal ore. Still don't entirely know what that was all about but it makes pretty armour and apparently turns pigs into insane armoured cannibals, who knew?"
Alphonse walked over to the window, opened it to watch the bustle of Daring Heights and continued.
"That Thurgor seemed to have a strange episode down there. Don't really know what it was about but I guess that's their business. I can track a bit and hunt a bit, some light foraging, sure. I do not know the ways of fungus. Anyway, I'll leave that with them to figure out. What we've got to do on the other hand is properly get our foothold in this city, and that mine got me thinking. Everywhere depends on raw material, and the Dawnlands is a frontier nation. There's every likelihood that proper industry isn't set up yet. If we can corner at least a small part of the market, either in production or imports, I reckon we could get serious amounts of wealth."
Delenarr's head immediately swivelled around at the mention of financial gain.
"The single most important thing you've said all day."
"Like we said, we're both helping each other out. You grant me your power for adventuring, I grant you your hoard and establish a foothold. Then we'll have the strength and resources to take back what is ours."
"Then let us make haste, and play this insipid game that we must."
"In a second, I need to wash the stench of damp... dampness off of me."
