After months of planning and preparation, the fruits of his labours were starting to come to fruition. Matthias Prideborn could not help but smile as he remarks to himself how masterfully he has pulled his strategy off.
Of course he really should pay thanks to the adventurers of the Dawnlands, they had played their parts better than he could have hoped. And turning the public opinion against them was child’s play especially after their recent blunder on his own secretary, he had to admit he did take special pleasure in watching that story twist and exaggerate as it was spread through the city. And why shouldn’t the reputation of the adventurers be dragged through the mud, the way they constantly interfered with the city had been grinding on him for some time ever since they killed a member of his own family.
Turning public opinion on the adventurers had been easier then even he had anticipated, though setting them up to fail had done its part. The warehouse incident hadn’t been as successful as he had hoped but there was enough damage done to spin the story. But the caravan disaster played off perfectly, everything destroyed and let in ruin and the adventurers returning with their tails between their legs, exactly the outcome he had hoped for, though he had wished at least one of the caravan drivers had been eaten, that really would have worked against them but alas.
He hated to admit but Urdox had been right about the Scales of Justice, it was the perfect bait to lure in the melding adventurers, and they couldn’t help themselves sticking their noses in. And then cowering in the shadows when he went to intercept them, he had prepared himself for an intellectual back and forth but they basically handed the crowd’s opinion to him.
Obviously he would also have to send a more formal thank you to his new found friends in K’ul Goran, they had been most helpful with his plans. He was also hopeful that once all said and done it would be the perfect opportunity to expand his company further abroad and Kul’goran does have such excellent access to shipping lanes.
With the majority of the city in the palm of his hands, he can finally begin to influence the Elder Council and mould the City to how it should be, a City of unity and commerce, a jewel all to itself shining in the desert.
But first the old city must be sacrificed, his work for the day had been done, he had sown the seeds of anger in some of the population and urged them to action, he could smell the scent of smoke on the wind, they had already begun and soon this phase of his plans will be complete.
