Another week, another plane. If I get nothing else from the Dawnlands, the travel it affords has been unparalleled. This time: The Beastlands, and specifically, Kigali. I’ve been keeping tabs on Mittens, who’s been acting most suspiciously of late, but I never imagined that doing so would take me to the Outer Planes. Whatever it is that he’s scheming is... dramatic, and I’d wager some kind of spell. If a wizard mutters, “I’ll find one eventually”, odds are against the subject being a particularly delicious pie. It’s a spell component, or a scroll, or I’ll eat my hat.
No real surprise, I suppose, when it became evident that he’d taken a job to clear out troublesome sprites from an orchard. Even half way across the Wheel, he still manages to find the Fey. And what Fey: a passel of upstart “smalls”, tired of being overlooked and obnoxious in their solution to the problem. Needless to say, a teachable moment presented itself. Especially given Cechec’s report of the lad’s behaviour in the Temple For All Seasons. I’d intended to query whether or not he’d learned anything from that, apologised to Raine, or meant it, but there’s nothing quite like learning by doing.
I think the message landed? Certainly he seemed put out by my insistence that he take the lead, and responsibility, for both the problem in hand and its less than ideal outcome.
Three items of further note:
1.) I’m not certain, but I think Mittens found what he was looking for. If he won’t allow me to help with this, I don’t know what to do. For good or ill, Summer will make a decision I suppose.
2.) We met a fascinating individual called Purrchance, a nomad between the Celestial plane and the Feywild (both Witching and Twilight), but more interestingly, a member of the Heradju: huge black tabaxi who are very, very clearly related to the boy. I would lay decent money that Mittens’ rural upbringing was as a remnant of this mobile tribe, and further, that his unusual name is a consequence of having not been through the Herad naming ceremony. He seemed entirely confused by the entirety of that possibility. If he doesn’t parse it soon I might need to arrange for a field trip.
3.) The roses of Kigali are incredible. I’ve taken a sample to pair with Creeping Darkness. My summer project will be better for it, I’m sure. Possibly more than I expect, given that Kigali has lines of ley. I’ve made the relevant notes, we’ll see how that plays out in filigree.
