"Excuse me. Have you seen anyone who smells of the sea?" Sparks-in-Shade grabbed a hold of the arm of a passing student. "Possibly a magic user of some kind? Nautical themed?"
The student stared blankly at Sparks. "How would I see the way someone smelled?"
Sparks paused for a moment. "I... umm. Hmmm. Yes. That's a good question. Stay there. In fact, you know what? Just go, if you're not going to help."
This was the fourth person he had attempted to interrogate, and he wasn't getting anywhere. His companions -- Amble, Carnan, Florian, Leonida and Levuka -- were all back in Bok's office. Their supposed client was struggling to remember the details of the job, and Sparks had decided that perhaps another approach would be helpful.
But the students around here were all absorbed in their own little worlds. That must be how this attacker had entered the building and stolen from a harmless academic. Stolen, not just valuable relics but memories as well.
Sparks clicked his beak in thought. *Who is this thief, and why did they target Daring Academy?* His own academic career had ended in disgrace, and he felt decidedly uncomfortable in the setting.
He turned as his companions walked out of the office. Maybe they had managed to get the information they needed.
A great wall of water raged around the companions, swirling and spraying, cold, white with seafoam. At the centre of this wide stone-carved chamber stood a tall, hideous figure - lashing tentacles atop a body that may perhaps have been human once. Its gurgling chant echoed through the cave, agitating the water into a tempest in time with the rise and fall of its haunting voice.
Levuka surged forward, her slight frame shimmering as flames engulfed her, to become a walking blaze. Sparks-in-Shade and Amble held back, their careful hands moving swiftly in intricate movements, paralyzing and misleading their opponents.
Carnan's voice rose in counterpoint to the tentacled creature, holding back the crashing waves while Leonida and Levuka struck at their enemies, cleaving a path to the central dais. Enemies fell, teeth gnashed. Appendages flailed. At last they stood silent, their enemies slain as the rushing water receded back.
They emerged from the cave a short while later, drenched and singed in equal measure. Mercifully still alive, and armed with knowledge to report back to their client. Assuming she remembers them.
