Another day, another mind numbing clerical task thinks Bok as she rifles through the next ream of cramped notes, all slightly smudged and stained with - what is that? Tea? Really, this wasn’t what she’d imagined when she got into academia, but you had to put one hand on the ladder and just start climbing, as her mother always told her. Easy for her to say - she wasn’t the one sat in a storage cupboard trying to decipher the mad ramblings of a dead woman while all the other Academy Fellows were out doing real science. Y’know, the kind that involved blowing things up and strapping archaeologists in leather hats.
Focus.She turns her gaze back to the notes.

Her eyes light upon a small wooden box. Frowning, she reaches over to pick it out of the crate of papers, empty wine flagons and sensible shoes - all that remains of Eloise Danforth’s life’s work - and it slips from her fingers.

Soaking, in fact, as though she’d plucked it from the sea, not a forgotten crate in one of Daring Academy’s dustiest store cupboards. Frowning, she picks it up again, gripping it firmly this time. The thing is cold, colder than it has any right to be. Pulse quickening just a little, she flicks the catch and opens the lid to see…
