Co written with the ever so lovely lauratolton
As the final enthusiastic waves and shouts of "Goodnight!" and "Come play with us again sometime!" echoed from the doorway of Tappy and Penny's home, Mittens turned to look towards the dark hill dotted with pinpricks of light in the distance that was Daring Heights.
It looked far. Much further than it should.
Maybe it was because night had fallen, turning the sprawling patch of grasslands between here and the northern outer-wall residents to a foreboding black sea. Or maybe, as Mitens glanced back hopefully to see the farmhouse door shut with a resoundingly loud 'thump', it was the thought that no one would be waiting to welcome him back home for the night. Eager to listen to his run down of the day's exploits, or..even, to wish him sweet dreams...
Seraphina got up onto her horse, a gentle bay by the name of Pebble, and patted her neck.
"Well then, time to go home Pebble." she said cheerfully.
Glancing behind her she spotted Mittens standing alone in the soft evening light. She waved at him and sensing his apprehension turned around.
"Mittens?" she called out.
Mittens heard Seraphina's call as if from a long away away, but it wasn't until a second call and a gentle nuzzle from Pebble as the temple girl moved closer to him that the small tabaxi moved, glancing up at her with wide distant eyes. "Oh-um sorry Miss Seraphina. D-Did ya need something?"
“Are you alright?” Seraphina asked gently, looking at her. “Do you need a ride home? You’re welcome to sit on the back of Pebble, she’s a very confident horse and sure footed. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.”
“Oh, well I was just thinking could ride Artlo home..but as you’re both offering-yes please!” Before Seraphina knew it the little Tabaxi has scrambled up sure footed behind her, his gloved paws wrapped securely around her waist.
“So have you been here long?” Mittens asked as they made their way onwards through the darkening plains.
Seraphina thought about it, looking up at the trees around them as they followed the path back.
“A little while but not very long, perhaps a year. The temple calls for most of my attention. What of yourself? I have not met you before.”
“Oh a couple of months now, I came here with me teacher Miss Kennari from Faerun. I’ve seen those big old temples in town, not never dared go in one though. We have a little chapel back home but it’s no where near as grand’n’mighty as half the places I’ve seen since coming here.”
“Yes, I feel like with a little more space they built bigger and grander.” Seraphina said with a chuckle, “Though it means we can help more, which is ideal. The moon maiden always guides me where to go next.”
She looked down at the saddle bags, remembering the large ball of beeswax the children had given her.
"Guide huh? S-so she's like your teacher then?" Asked Mittens, a little puzzled as he cast about for a sight of the moon at it's mentioned in the darkening sky.
“Guide, teacher, protector and friend. She has been my constant companion these past well…fifteen years I should think it is now, possibly even before that.”
Seraphina smiled softly.
“And what of you Mittens? Have you friends and family here?”
"Wow that's a lot time...um..Well I've made a couple friends since being here, one main one being my good friend Calla especially. She's always trying to look out me, much like you did for me today! Then there's me teacher Miss Kennari of course..Always tried made me lessons fun, even the boring bits, and always has something good to eat prepared when I got back from an adventure...She's...She's away at the moment." Mittens ended with a slight bit of hesitation.
“Oh? Where has she gone, somewhere nice?” Seraphina asked, she’d picked up on Mitten’s hesitation, the shake in her voice.
There was something worrying him about that and she was curious what it was.
"Oh..She's doing some Important work apparently-she's a very powerful witch ya know! She's probably just got caught up doing some of her'mazing performances for a couple of villages along the road like she did back home. She'll be back in couple days I'm sure..."
'At least, I hope so.' Thought Mittens quietly to himself.
“But you’re worried about her, this doesn’t sound like something ordinary that she’d do, go missing for so long?” Seraphina pushed gently. “If you need help looking for her then I would be happy to offer assistance.”
Pebble snorted at that as they walked along, “See even Pebble can help.” Seraphina chuckled.
"Y-you'd do that?" Mittens asked surprised. He'd be reluctant to say, reluctant to tell anyone about Miss Kennari's far longer than expected absence, afraid of what possible repercussions might come from it. Yet something about Seraphina's calm friendly manner, her un-condescending air as she spoke to him had let the worry just slip out of him.
“I would yes and I have enough provisions for an extended journey, though perhaps a little top up would be wise.” Seraphina said, keeping her eyes upon the road, “Guide me to where we should start and we shall begin our search.”
"W-well I-I don't actually even know where she's gone to be honest..." Mittens admitted with almost a laugh, still shocked by Serphina sheer lack of condescendence and eagerness to help, and almost feeling at odds to be the one pull the reigns as he added, "and I'm not sure going off just the two of us is the best of ideas, least from recent experiences anyway."
He was thoughtful for a moment before starting to say with building enthusiasm, "But I'd definitely appreciate the help! Those wings of yours looked amazing, and I bet you've got lots of loads of powerful angel magics and skills right?!" He leaned forward in the saddle to peer up at Seraphina with a wide awed smile.
Seraphina chuckled, “Thank you and I have a few spells yes. But yes, let us gather others to help, the more the merrier.” She said and glanced back at Mittens.
And as Serphina bade Mittens goodnight as dropped him off outside his and Miss Kennari's apartment he felt happier, safe in the knowledge that maybe there were a few more folks, 'guardian angels' even, looking out for others in this world, if only you knew how to look for them.
