Later in the evening, Rae catches up to Calla. "Hey, you said we should talk, what's up?"
Calla's sat on a log, a little way back from the crowd. She's not hard to find. "What you said in that last tent, I think.... we've got a lot in common?" She raises a hand and counts off fingers, “Book learnt, no love for our past, left home for knowledge, new to Kantas?”
Rae sits next to her and smiles at that. "Now you say it, yeah, I can see that. Did you say where you were from? I don't want to intrude if it's personal."
The dark elf turns to study Rae's face, and takes a long beat while holding her breath, before speaking, "You've heard of the Feywild? Yeah. Beneath that".
"You?"
Rae's eyes light up at the sound of Calla's home. "I've read about the Feywild and I've always wanted to go, but I never knew there was anything BENEATH it!" They take a moment to calm themselves down before answering her question. "Just this little underground community back on mainland Faerun. The cave system had an opening by the sea and the view of the horizon was.. more than enough to make me want to leave."
"No, nearly no-one does. And that's a good thing. I don't recommend it". Calla takes a shaky breath. "Anyway, what are you doing now that you're here in Kantas? I'm working in the Academy's geography department. Sometimes."
"Oh hey, me too! I'm surprised I haven't run into you before, I've just been doing some general scribing and organising work in the arcane department. Also only sometimes." Rae looks brightly and enthusiastic about finding a fellow colleague and how much the two continue to have in common.
"I, uh, don't have the lights on when I work. I think a lot of people don't know I'm there at all. The arcane department, though? You're a wizard? I'm... uh, an arcanist - Wards. Promises. Abjuration".
"Oh that's so cool! I've learnt that what I do is more widely referred to as bladesinging, though I wasn't instructed formally so I never knew the terminology. I just knew it as channelling magic through my movement, it felt natural. But I respect the school of abjuration a lot, with some of the stuff I run into I wish I studied it a bit more myself." Rae bashfully scratches the back of their head.
"Honestly, I can't imagine doing what you do. It's so... instinctive? I tried to do something last week to protect a friend, and it went so badly so fast I don't think I'm ever going into danger without wards again". Calla shudders at the sudden memory of an axe-wielding Tortle bearing down on her, "If you want to swap notes sometime, I'm more than happy to share them. Be a shame to make another friend and then lose them". She stands up, takes another long look at Rae, and then smiles, for the first time really. "It's been a long evening, and I should... rest. But come by the Maps sometime. I'll put a light on".
Rae returns the smile in turn very genuinely, glad to finally see a positive impact on Calla. "Absolutely! We should discuss magic more and study together, I think we could learn some things from each other. Have a lovely night." They put their hand out to shake.
"You too". Calla takes Rae's hand gently, and clearly new to the gesture shakes it just once before letting go, "Enjoy the rest of the fair, and remind me to introduce you to Mittens before long, I think you'll like him too". And on that, she's gone into the dark.
