Amble decides that he would like to be more useful to FE's librarian this week and try to "get into their good books", by taking on some Work they really want doing.
The on-duty librarian thinks a bit and eventually says:
"Okay, well, you know how the chapel here in the fort just kind of... manifests new shrines and altars and stuff when people arrive who have new gods? We've been trying to keep track of all of them, here's the notebook, but we don't know all the iconography so some of the entries are just like 'emerging mole god question-mark question-mark'. Could you work through this list and try to figure out who all the gods are, make a note of that, and then if you've got time you could also do like a bibliography for each one in case we need to look things up? You may need to go and actually look at the chapel too, some of the descriptions are a bit vague."
Unfortunately for Amble, he soon realises that the state of the chapel was more chaotic than he'd bargained for (1+8+2=11).
Theology is exceptionally esoteric. Accordingly, it largely resisted Amble's attempts to wrestle it into anything more systematic - once he actually started to try to get to grips with all of the various deities, faiths, denominations, and their respective religious icons.
Cheeks and ears glowing red, and hair unusually curly, Amble mutters something to the Librarian about having "broken the back of the pre-work", and feeling confident that he'll have things more robustly rounded off next week...
He reluctantly accepts the minimum payment (of 1 sp), which will at least cover some expenses and some of Stiffy's food.
Extracting himself from the intricately tangled web of FE's various shrines and icons, Amble clears his head with some further conditioning exercises in 'Strength Corner' supervised by Kruger (sweating profusely with Archie as they pump iron together). He is pleased to see Archie again.
Soon after, Amble heads down to the spell duelling contest, feeling in relatively good spirits - although notably more cautious than last week.
His Opponent: Criss-Cross
A slightly nervous goblin who's come into their powers recently. But they have quite some confidence when manipulating the purple lightning that arcs from their hands.
Outcome: A close, but satisfying victory
Amble is able to compensate his lack of earnings in the library with 12GP earned from a (surprisingly narrow!) victory over some of the more junior adventurers.
He makes sure to speak with them encouragingly after the match: explaining how he had been able to lead them astray with some illusions, and complimenting them wholeheartedly - on their exceptionally deft application of lightning, and quick reactions.
