[DTA 25/12/22] Stars in their Eyes at Fort Ettin
Amble is based at FE:
Inspired by last week's adventure (saving The Moon, and Toril with it), he decides to spend his days in the Observatory, tracking the motion of those stars, moons and planets which hold most significance (Religious or Arcane) - including those of the moon in particular. In order to earn some money on the side, he offers to help out the librarians at the same time ...
There are a number of books that contain charts and tables for the calculated trajectories of celestial bodies. As we're turning towards a new year, Amble will be comparing those with actual observations. He will then update the reference tables at the back of each book - updating "correction factors" and "error margins" and so forth, to account for any deviations from the original predictions.
He will also be adding an insert into each book, which clarifies what was learned last week : that over the last few months, the moon's trajectory has increased by 10 m/s; that this would have lead to a perceptible and potentially disastrous outcome within 3 months; that this seems to be related to a powerful eldritch being from beyond; and that the acceleration has at least been temporarily halted for now. He will leave a blank space at the end of the inserts to update as he finds out more.
His Work goes ok, if only thanks to his will with Investigation (12) ... a modest lifestyle earned and no complications. It took a while to remember how to operate the Observatory equipment well enough to add correction factors to text books. Then got a bit distracted with the beauty of observatory enhanced star gazing, as well as wanting to triple-check any readings related to the moon.
'Wow, uh, okay,' says the librarian on duty at Fort Ettin when Amble reports back on the work he's done. 'Prelen told me someone had offered to check our astronomy books but... you understand this isn't Candlekeep, right? This is a fort for adventurers. Some of them can't even read. I mean I appreciate all this work you've done but... I don't know how much use it's going to get here. I can't really justify paying you more than this...'
"You know what they say ... 'aim for the moon, and if you miss then you might hit the stars.'", Amble replies,"This Fort has been home to Veridian long enough to merit a place in the arcane history books. I believe that this library will continue to play an important part in the history of Kantas."

He also finds time to continue with his workout sessions with Kruger in Kavel's Corner. He hopes that Kavel will be proud when he sees him next.
