Dear Ma & Pa,
It’s definitely getting colder over here in New Hillborrow. Really foggy mornings, with bursts of sunlight and warmth in the afternoons. The best time, really, to be doing any kind of work outside. Can you believe it’s been a year though since I left home? I know, I’m due back home for a visit soon, and I will. I miss you both so much. I miss being at home. But there’s a few things I wanna complete here first before I come back.
Like my Sylvan lessons! Those are going well. I’m about halfway through the ‘syllabus;’ with Orla, my teacher. It’s making the magic I’ve been studying a lot easier to understand. Of course, there’s many different kinds of magic out there but you know me, I’ve been fascinated with the stuff from the Feywild. (And, before you even think about it, I’m being careful.)
But I’m not only learning magic. I’ve gotten a lot better at my fighting techniques. Actually, just the other day, I met an earth genasi wizard by the name of Rae. They’re fully into magic a heckuva lot more than me, but I could see where we were kind of similar. Both of us use axes (or swords, as is their tool of choice) and magic when training. Their magic is stronger than mine, but they still asked if I would train them sometime. I almost didn’t know what to say. I never would have thought someone would want me to train them, a guy who’s more self taught, than anything. It was a nice compliment.
So, I met Rae going to Mey Huffadin’s again the other day. You know, the gnome tinkerer that asked me and a few others to test out her inventions? Well, we who went last time kinda did a number on her training dummies and she wanted us to help make them better. My friend Velania came along, which was really nice to see her going out again, helping people in a way that’s different than counselling them at the Temple of Selune. Pipper, another friend who is also a very proficient tinkerer, came with us. It was like witnessing a storm in a teacup. When she and Mey got going, it was impossible to separate them! The other gentleman I met was a guy by the name of Jax. He is as big, if not bigger, than his name implies. But he’s a very spirited type as well, and very stylish. Guy almost forgot to take off his pinstriped white blazer when the training dummies went haywire, but he remembered at the last second.
Which brings me to the crux of what happened. Mey, for all her smarts and planning, kind of forgot to change the switch from ‘enemies’ to ‘friends’ for her training dummies. All the work we did to buff them up — they serve as Mey’s security because the Feythorn isn’t the safest place to live but she likes it there, don’t blame her — ended up biting us in the ass. But, luckily, we’re not pushovers. Still, Velania’s magic is no joke. She’s really strong. I’m glad it’s tempered by such a kind and caring heart.
Speaking of, I’ve included some extra money with this letter. I know you say don’t worry about it, but I figured that patch of leaky roof in the front hall could do with that fix finally. Yoara, please make sure it gets done. If not, I’m fixing it when I get home.
I’ll think about when it is I’ll be coming back and let you know. I’ll even check with Merla to see if we could have a whole Copperkettle Candlemas! That would be nice.
Love you lots!
Marto
P.S. I made those wheels for Mr. Ruffadin and Mey turned them into the coolest transforming legs! Now he can adventure on and off road, like a pro.
