Dear Ma & Pa,
Thank you for the gifts! You all didn’t have to send me anything, but I love what you did. Nearly forgot it was my birthday, actually. Time’s just been flying by and I’ve been spending so much of it rebuilding New Hillborrow, helping with the harvest and all that here after the githyanki attack — it’s been non-stop. But I’m making sure I’m keeping things slow, don’t worry.
Sylvan lessons with Orla have been progressing really well but even she noticed I had been getting a little restless and so I decided to take the opportunity to help someone out.
A tinkerer and inventor who lives in the woods south of Daring asked for help, the kind that would see us testing her latest gizmos and gadgets. We were met by an eldgerly basset hound by the southern gate of the city, who spoke to us only in “woofs” and “barks”. And by that I mean the dog said the words “woof” and “bark”. It was honestly less strange than the wheels he had to use for his hind legs but not by much.
My companions were Fog, Lolli, Dámian, and Glade, a right mix of small and tall, magic user and weapons masters. We were the perfect group of people Mey, the gnome tinkerer and mage, was looking for.
We were brought not too deep into the Feythorn to Mey’s humble home of tree houses, pulleys, ropes and waterwheels. The whole place was a marvel — I’ve done my best to sketch it out below but I’m not an artist so I’m sorry if it seems rather crude.
After meeting Mey and finally finding out the dog’s name — Mr. Ruffidan by the by — the master inventor began pulling out her magical items.
First were a pair of boots that would allow one of us to jump to incredible heights. When the person landed they would let out a burst of steam that could knock out nearby enemies if they were not prepared for it. Lolli took these.
The second invention was a helmet decorated in huge stag antlers (Mey assured us these antlers were not from a buck she killed but rather found in the woods surrounding her home). Imbued with magics that would allow the wearer to charge at a target with incredible force, thus knocking them over if the momentum was great enough I indicated a passing interest in this one… but Dámian wore it in the end.
Next was a backpack. Pretty standard, right? Except for the extra set of hands it contained! Glade, an earth genasi druid was the one to claim this one, rather adamantly actually. I was interested to see how she would use it.
The fourth invention was a crossover between a sling and a large crossbow. It’s… rather hard to describe but essentially it would take these glass tubes filled with potions (only properly labelled after the fact) and shoot them at a target thus delivering the contents to the target without them needing to do the work themselves! Fog decided to take this one.
Finally, the fifth invention and the one yours truly used in this little test trial. It was shaped like a kite, painted with blue skies and fluffy clouds. Though it was beautiful to behold, what it did was even more remarkable. It gave me the gift of flight and allowed me to divebomb my chosen target like a starling, wings flashing out at the last second to save me from gravity’s pull!
It was amazing.
We put those items through the ringer. Discovering for the first time, every time what potions Fog was slinging at the training dummies — because they were not properly labelled, at all — and adjusting on the fly, whilst Glade ran into trees to offer her help with some extra hands. The helm Dámian wore worked perfectly with his giant ruin magics, and Lolli, already quite a hoppy person, jumped leaps and bounds over all of us from one side of the field to the other! It was… so much fun.
Mey took our notes, said she would look at mark twos of possibly all of them, paid us and then sent us on our merry way with Mr. Ruffidan escorting us back to the city. I asked him if he would be interested in having some new wheels, Dámian offering to help — turns out he’s a very proficient smith — and the hound said yes. I’ll be looking to do that next week.
Wow, I didn’t realise how long this had gotten! Well, I’d best get going. Got some work to do here and a lesson to prepare for. Hope you’re doing well, and the bees are getting all tucked into their hives soon. Give my love to Yoara, Eina, Berton, and his little ’uns.
Miss you both so much.
All my love,
Marto
