'There is another.'
"Nice of you to finally say something. Did you know?"
'Why yes, we have afternoon tea every week... of course I didn't know, Frozendagger!'
Wil recoiled slightly. He wasn't used to this much raw emotion coming from the aboleth. He was sitting in regular room in the Seashank with the Water Guardian when the aboleth spoke in their minds. The elemental put her hand to her temple as she began to speak.
"But how could it have slipped your notice? Surely there must have been some signs?"
'I only caught wind a couple of days ago, that's when I implanted a subliminal signal into Frozendagger to investigate it.'
"I'm sorry, you what?!" Wil immediately snapped.
'Don't worry about it.' the aboleth retorted. 'We are solitary beings for the most part, well versed in hiding our presence. This one though, they're being too loud, too forceful. I am known to be impatient among my kind but this operation is progressing far too quickly and far too messily. Either this one hasn't even a fraction of a boorm*, or for some reason they need to act fast.'
"To what end?" The Water Guardian mused.
'Clearly they are trying to expand their power base, gain servitors and from there annex land and get out of that lake, although it wouldn't surprise me if there was an underground channel. In any case, this neophyte is an interloper in my affairs and entirely unwanted.'
"I feel like I already know the answer to this but what do you want me to do?" Wil asked.
'Oust them. Obliterate them in my name. Induce the long dreaming if possible but slaughtering them is fine. Leave no trace of their existence.'
"Have you no compassion for your kind?" The Water Guardian said faintly.
'...Compassion. The word has never translated well into my native. We know who we are. This is how we are. They are building a house with all their might. I will knock it down by barely lifting a phalange because they are in my path. That is their error, and that is all. Besides, aren't their actions referred to by your kind by another word that never translates well? Evil, no?'
"As much as I hate to say it, they're right." Wil grumbled. "This has gone beyond negotiations. I'll deal with it."
'Good. Happy hunting, Frozendagger.'
Silence fell over the room.
"Just communicating with that thing feels disgusting. Is that what it's like all the time?" The Water Guardian asked.
"All the time." Wil sighed. "All. The. Time."
*a unit of time used by aboleths, loosely translated as 'flow'. Unclear how long one is, however given the extreme longevity of aboleths it is probably in the order of centuries or even millennia
