The Mossy Mug Cafe
In the corner of The Mossy Mug Cafe opposite an empty seat suitable for a small-sized person, sat a dapper, middle-aged gentleman, wearing a magenta-coloured, smart suit and sky blue tie. Archie Haltuhr had arrived early precisely to reserve a more favourable chair for his companion today.
Archie’s magic quill was in hand, and his spell book was open on an empty page. He began to write, "Utility vs. Damage?" Archie paused to consider. On second thought, he turned the quill around, so that the feather end now faced the page. With a sweeping motion, and as if dusting the page with the quill’s feather, the lone sentence he had just written was erased. Archie nodded to himself, and thought, "I'll just wait and see what’s available."
Hop Skip and an Entrance
A few moments later, a lilac harengon with her candy decorated hair clip, wearing her usual dress with gumdrop buttons came bouncing through the door of the Mossy Mug Cafe smiling. Seeing Archie sitting down, she waved happily in his direction and hopped over to join him at the table. Once she got there she stopped and smiled “Hi Archie, it’s nice to see you again? How are you doing? Hope you weren’t waiting too long for me?”. She then hopped towards her designated empty chair and sat down.
"Lolli, hello! No, I wasn't waiting long at all. What a pleasure to see you again!"
Archie had stood up to greet Lolli. Now that she was seated, Archie went to sit back down. As he did, his seat pushed itself under himself, as if an invisible servant had helped him.
Comfortably back in the chair, Archie continued, "I'm doing very well, thank you. My friends Kavel and Mendal tell me we were rewarded exceptionally well by Lady Aurelia. They were rather jealous of their old friend who's doing quite well for a novice adventurer, mmmm ha ha!"
"Noooow," Archie began anew, "you tell me how you have been, and what will you be having for tea and cake? It's on me."
Lolli smiled “You are super duper nice, Archie. Thank you. That would be lovely and maybe I can get you back another time?“. Lolli looked over hopeful that she can possibly repay the favour another day. Lolli thought back to her previous adventures for a moment “Ohh, I’ve met Kavel once. Well I’m hoping it’s the same one I’m thinking of. He’s a really nice Goliath and really strong? But… I don’t think I’ve met Mendal before. Maybe I will another day… But yes Lady Aurelia is great and we were lucky to get her help. It was such an unusual adventure this time but I’m just glad we were able to help. But I’m a bit sad we weren’t able to help stop the thief this time though.”. Lolli sighed slightly. “Maybe next time?”
Lolli paused before adding “I would very much like to add that your outfit looks amazing. The colours are so vibrant and work wonderfully together. It’s a lovely suit”.
“Thank you!” Archie said, hand on heart to show he was touched by the compliment.
Lolli smiled over happily looking at the details of the suit. “As was your other one on the adventure. Where did you get them, if you don’t mind me enquiring? ”
“They are so dissimilar in personality,” Archie thought to himself, as he compared the two wizards he had met in Daring Heights; Doctor Ruthenia Truelove, and Lolli. “But, I am delighted to have encountered both of them. I wonder what they would make of each other? One wears a permanent grimace, the other a permanent smile!”
Tale of the Tall Man
Smiling at his own little thought, and delighted to be complimented, Archie paused before he began his response, “well, firstly I must say; yes. Yes, I would very much look forward to another get-together, of course! Secondly, you’ve definitely met Kavel. I know this from his description of you, and your description of him as ‘really strong’.” Archie performed a light hearted bicep pose to emphasise the word strong. “You should have seen him at nine years old, Lolli. As a human, my jaw hit the floor when he lifted a barrel that I was trying, so hard, to lift myself. He lifted it with ease!”
“Ohh you’ve known Kavel for a while then? Are you really good friends? Are you related to him?” Lolli looked over curiously wondering if they’re a family.
“Oh good heavens no, we’re not related. Ha ha!” Archie laughed. “No, me and him? If we were related, I would be an embarrassingly weak Goliath, or him a freakishly strong Human. Saying that, ever since I last saw him in the old continent, he’s now become a freakishly strong Goliath, even for a Half-Giant!”
Now Mendal,” Archie shook his head playfully before continuing, “you haven’t met. You would remember him - very loud dwarf in very well crafted armour that he made himself - and he would have told you he made it.”
Lolli chuckled for a moment “Ok, I will remember this with Mendal”. Then she added “Does he make his own armour?”
“He does, yes.” Archie confirmed. “If you have any smithing or tinkering that needs doing, I highly recommend him. Clan Crafter he is, and divinely blessed by Moradin. I’ll introduce you.”
Lolli smiled happily “Oh that would be wonderful. I love to meet other people who like to craft things”.
“Now. What you were saying, Lolli,” Archie redirected the conversation, “‘This time’ - as you put it, that is the rrrrrrright attitude! We must study more, try and understand what magic the ransomer was using, and by understanding it, we will be better able to challenge the miscreant.”
Lolli nodded along as Archie talked about catching the thief. She felt a wash of guilt that she wasn’t able to get a good glance at them as she was wiggling out of the bag. She continued nodding and made a promise to herself that she will practise her magic so she can find the thief next time.
An Important Question
“Now,” Archie said after a brief pause, “let us see to tea and cake, as a matter of priority, and then I’d very much like to; know what interested you in the conjuration arts, perhaps exchange spell books to peruse, and… I’ll tell you all about where I acquired my suits.” Archie raised his eyebrows in delight when he mentioned the suits. “And thank you so much for your kind words! I enjoy pairing colours! Are you interested in fashion yourself? I see such a strong theme of sweets in your lovely dress.”
Lolli smiled at the tea and cake comment, “Oohhh I love tea and cake. I hope they have chocolate cake. Wait no… strawberry and vanilla. Ohh no… Carrot Cake…”, Lolli trails off thinking about cake for a brief moment. But instantly snapped herself out of a daze “Ohh sorry. I got lost thinking of cakes… Which makes me think of an important question for you…”. Lolli looks over with a serious face “What’s your favourite cake flavour?” she grinned happily and chuckled afterwards.
“Hmmm, oh yes, that is an important question, indeed,” Archie smiled as he considered his answer, “last time I was here I had a delightful Mille Feuille - it was heavenly. I am partial to something with cream. However, today, I would like to sample The Mossy’s Baba Au Rhum with an Earl Grey with a dash of milk.” As Archie explained his cake preferences, his spell book had removed itself from his satchel and placed itself on the table. The leather of the cover was a dark brown, with metal edge protectors made of gold, and made to look like a pattern of crystals. There were pressed images all over the leather of; crystals, an owl’s face and a quill in a repeating, decorative fashion. At the centre of the cover, was a golden drawn outline of Archie’s portrait. On the back, was a similar golden lined portrait, but of Archie’s back.
Lolli was nodding along approvingly to Archie’s cake choices when suddenly she saw his spellbook. She gasped “Oh my gumdrop, your spellbook looks amazing”. She stares at it admiring all the details she can see. After a few moments, Lolli then reached into her own pocket in her dress and pulled out her spell book. It was pink and decorated head to toe in bejewelled sequins and pins of all shapes and sizes. Lots of glitter and bows. She placed it on the table “Here’s mine. And ohh yes spell swapping is such fun. I love learning new spells and helping people learn spells. Here’s my book. Take a look and learn whichever ones you’d like”. Lolli slides her spell book over close to Archie to pick up and read.
“And oh yes, I would love to hear about your suit. It’s amazing. And ohh my gumdrop, yes I love to make outfits of all kinds. Whatever people like. But obviously I love, love to make ones in my own style. That’s with sweets and candy elements, of course”, Lolli smiles happily. “I moved here to the Dawnlands not so long ago and I’m finishing my apprenticeship with Fitzgrove Fashionables here in Daring Heights. Do you know it?”
“I do not. But, it sounds like I would very much like to pay it a visit,” Archie said, as he pointed at Lolli’s spell book that she had placed in front of him, and the book opened itself up for Archie.
“Here is mine,” Archie said, using his hands this time to place his own spell book in front of Lolli, “you’ll find a choice of index pages at the rear, indexing the spells by wizard level, but additionally also by school. If you wished to peruse my Conjuration spells, you might find it easier to use that index. At the front; everything is listed alphabetically.” Archie was delighted to take a fellow wizard through his spell book and show off the indexing possibilities that Scribers can manage with their magical quills.
Spell Exchange
“Ooooo. Misty Step and the Shatter spell. Yes please, if you wouldn’t mind?” Archie said, having found a couple of spells that caught his eye in Lolli’s spell book. He re-summoned his magic quill to hand. “But, before I get busy with scribing, please tell me your tea and cake order and I’ll go see to that while you browse?”
Lolli smiled “Yes of course. You can learn those. They’re quite handy from my experience”. Lolli paused for a moment to think “Oh ok, I’d like one Cherry Sparkling Misty Tea with a Sherbert Strawberry Cake slice, please. And also thank you”.
“Coming right up!” Archie stood and headed to the counter.
As Archie headed over to place the order Lolli happily sat at the table and reached over to take a peek at his book. She always loved reading through spellbooks. Hoping to learn something new. She opened his book and had a browse at his spells. Archie’s seemed so organised. She’s very impressed. Lolli read through his spellbook thoroughly. Once he arrived back to the table she smiled “Ohh your book is very cool Archie. I definitely don’t have as much organised like you. I would love to learn Web and ohhhh Galder’s Tower. Wow I heard that’s supposed to be a super fun spell”.
Lolli passed back over Archie’s book. “Since you got the yummy treats, I’ll let you copy your spells first”. Lolli immediately took some cutlery out and started to eat the piece of cake in front of her. Lolli had done this spell swapping thing before. She knew this was going to take some time and she was happy to wait.
After a few moments, Lolli looked over to Archie “So Archie, where are you from? Have you always lived in the Dawnlands? Do you have a place here in Daring Heights?”
Archie’s magic quill glided across a blank page of his spell book, as if it had a mind of its own transforming Lolli’s notation in her book, into Archie’s preferred notation in his. There was barely a pause between reading Lolli’s book and writing on his own.
“I’m not native, no Lolli,” Archie responded to Lolli’s question, looking up from the page at her, whilst still writing flawlessly in his spell book, “I’m staying in a lovely accommodation in the Dwarven Quarter near Mendal and Kavel. We’re all from the north of Faerun. Those two are from Crafter’s Hill, and Iron Mountain respectfully, and I am from the neighbouring port town of Grey-Sur-Mer.”
Less than ten minutes of conversation went by since Archie first began scribing.
“All done!” Archie announced, pleased. “Misty Step and Shatter. Now I just need to put the time in and practise them.” Archie turned his spell book around to face Lolli, opened up at the page with the Web spell.
“What attracted you to the Conjuration school of magic?”
Lolli looked over confused to Archie “Wait… did you just… copy all those spells that quickly?”. She looked down at her book and over to Archie’s spellbook trying to process everything. Normally it would take her hours to copy spells and so would most wizards unless…. “OH MY GUMDROP, you must be from the Order of the Scribes? Am I right?”.
“Oh did I not say?” Archie said surprised, “well of course I am! Here look.” Archie wrote on his hand with his quil. He wrote his name, Archie, but each letter came out in a different colour of ink. Smiling all along, he then turned over his quill and erased the ink on his hand with the feather.
Lolli smiles “Oh I’m also not native to the Dawnlands either. Not where I was born. Definitely a lot of adjustments to the Feywilds”.
After getting her spell book back she smiled “I’m glad to help. And yes there’s a bit of practise to using those spells. But they’re handy to know.”
Lolli flipped her spell book to a blank page and looked to Archie’s spell book to copy her new spells. She began writing carefully. “Ok I’ll start writing now, but I am going to be nowhere near as fast as you. But I’ll try”.
“Oh don’t worry about it!” Archie replied. “Us Scribes are used to it. I’ll tuck into my Baba Au Rhum.” Archie brought his cake plate in front of him with his magical telekinesis.
After a few moments of writing the first spells Lolli looked over to Archie “Ohh yes, you asked me why did I pick conjuration? Well I’ll be honest no one has asked me that before. Ha, ohh ok, so I picked it because I thought it would be useful to have. You know to be able to summon objects instantly always seemed amazing to me”. Lolli took out her wand and waved it to cast a quick spell to summon her step biscuit step ladder. She hopped out of her seat and hopped up to the top of the highest step. Which gave her an extra 3 feet of height, which brought her just over the heights of the table they were sitting at. “Tah-Dah”. Lolli smiled widely, “Especially being in a world with so many tall people, things make me more level. Like this…”. Lolli continued to smile and hopped back down.
She hopped back down her ladder and sat in her chair “So Archie, what made you choose the Order of Scribes?”
Origins of a Scribe
“Well,” Archie said, extending the word out conspicuously, “I am one of five children. My eldest sister - the eldest child - inherited the family estate. My brother, the second oldest, is also involved in running the family’s interests, while me and my younger sister and brother had more freedom to choose our way in the world. My younger sister is something of a botanist. My younger brother enjoys expeditions, and I always had a fascination with scholarly pursuits. Now, since my position in the family was sufficiently low on the totem pole, and it was unlikely I would need to be concerned with the family’s interests; my scholarly bent was indulged. In fact, I understand from my mother that, as soon as I was accepted into the Order of Scribes, it was a badge of honour for the family - a scholarly wizard in the home.” Archie smiled to punctuate his last sentence.
“Now, why The Scribes? After pouring over many famous wizards' examples of spell notation, I displayed an uncanny talent for deciphering any wizard’s notation in little time. You see, I was a natural fit for The Scribes!” Archie punctuated his sentence by holding his hands out to the side with his palms face up.
“And now Lolli,” Archie said, as he stood, “I think I will entrust you with my spellbook. No rush, do take as long as you need. I hope you don’t mind, you see, while you scribe, I can use the time to pop over to the McAdams Pit. Shatter and certainly Misty Step are very popular spells. I might be able to catch the odd arcane duelist demonstrate them for me, which would be good for my mastering of them. What say you? Does that work for you?”
“Are you sure? Sorry I can’t be as fast as you. But if you’re sure. I will take very good care of it”.
“I’m sure you will, just as I’m sure I’ve made a good friend today. Now, if you haven’t finished scribing by the time I’m back, I guess I’ll have two reasons to come visit Fitzgrove Fashionables.”
Lolli looked up to Archie and smiled widely “Oh my gumdrop. Thank you, Archie. And yes feel free to come by Fitzgrove Fashionables any time”. Lolli grinned happily. “Good luck with the spell duel, Archie”. Lolli waved him goodbye. She took a sip of her tea “Mmmhmm now to get to work”. And she continued to write as quickly as she could, copying the new spells.
