Barden comes from South Faerun, an acolyte trained in the martial and divine arts.
Barden is part of a sect of gold, or hill, dwarves who worship Berronar Truesilver, the dwarven Reverend Mother. Her priests are known as faenor. Barden's sect interprets thunder and lightning as expressing the power of Berronar in rage. As such he has spent a large portion of his 70 years growing vegetables and tending the fruit orchards in the temple gardens as an acolyte in pious worship of his God.
It was the duty of the Temple of Berronar to assist in the protection of the dwarf settlements whenever undeath and darkness encroached on the dwarven territories. From time to time, clerics blessed with divine power were called upon by the elders to accompany bands of dwarven axewielders and crossbow militia to support them in their hunt for the foulest of creatures threatening the homeland.
On one such hunt, Barden accompanied his father, Krakden, also a priest of Berronar. The band was surprised at camp by a horde of zombies in overwhelming numbers. All but Barden and two dwarves were lost in the surprise attack and he barely escaped with his life. Barden witnessed his father Krakden succumb under a mass of zombies until his flesh and limbs were torn apart. Krakden's radiant warhammer sung no more from that day on. The experience gave Barden an entrenched hatred for any undead: every one of them must be wiped out. They are in direct opposition to the life giving force central to Berronar's teachings.
During his life at the Temple and following the traumatic stress of losing his father Krakden so brutally, Barden developed something of a mad tic. He is convinced that he has a small red imp on his left shoulder which advises him, mocks him, questions his decisions. He doesn't tell anyone about the red imp because he's aware that it looks a bit mad, like. But he's convinced that the imp is there and that it talks to him in a most disrespectful manner: Barden can sometimes be seen in whispered and exasperated debate with his left shoulder. It is understood by those observing him unseen that the Barden believes the imp's name is Nigel. If questioned about Nigel, Barden denies tits existence and tries to change the subject.
Taking leave granted by the Temple to enact missionary work in the form of wiping out undead creatures abroad (and some would say to try to get help with his Nigel issue), Barden arranged a ship from Baldur's Gate to the island where the fabulous portal to the Kantas Expanse was found ...
