Sometimes the ones we love, or think we love, care about us… but not in the way we need or want them to love us.
Sometimes the ones we love end up falling in love with someone else.
Sometimes the ones we love keep us caged, chained to a promise of what could have been.
Sometimes the ones we love hold us back from seeing what we truly need.
He loved her. He was falling in love with her when it all happened.
But then he got… distracted, drawn away and chose to fall into the arms of someone who manipulated him into thinking they loved him.
But devils don’t love. They only covet.
After all the blood and pain and sacrifice was done, he looked back at her, hoping… only to discover she was not looking back at him.
It hurt. Yondalla’s grace, it hurt so much. He felt… Anger. Frustration. Confusion. He had let her down. He had betrayed her and himself.
That’s what haunts him the most.
He was a fool and there’s no way to change what he did, or what happened. It is done and he’s trying to make his peace with it.
But Zola and Marto are not the same people they were before it all began. She has… changed. He can’t love who she is becoming. Marto knows his love for Zola won’t help. It won’t stop her from walking the path of destruction she is going down.
Maybe he is wrong for not trying, for leaving her to walk alone…
But when people get to the point beyond pain, to desperation, to the precipice of self destruction-
No. Marto’s been there. Not again. He cannot go back to that precipice.
I need to find me, again — to find my happiness.
Sometimes…
Sometimes we have to leave the ones we love behind…
