Dear Ma & Pa (& Yoara, Berton, & Eina),
Thank you for the honey you sent me. My friend Fog and I really enjoyed the picnic we had. It’s hard to pick a favourite when each of them are so different but I think mine is the ambrosia. Fog really liked the lavender flavour. If you have any more to try Pa, I’d love to share some with my other friends.
Sorry for my lack of letters recently. I’ve been preoccupied with helping my friends, keeping the realms safe and all that. No joke, there was this whole thing between devotees of Shar vs. Selûne that I got tangled up in. Don’t worry, I am okay. I spent some time with Merla when it was all over. I know you still may not like the Feywild a whole lot but even you’ve got to admit, her court is really nice. I think I even befriended one of the spirits there.
I’ve been taking it slow since coming back. There was a whole invasion with githyanki and their red dragons — Merla and even the River King, Ulorian, helped to defend the Dawnlands — but after coming back from Phlegethos — where we had faced the devotees of Shar in a final confrontation — I helped the defenders in Daring Heights. A lot of people didn’t make it, but it could have been a lot worse. There’s a girl, Leona Autumn, who’s missing, one of many unaccounted for. Some of my friends are going to try to find her soon, I think. The nearby town of New Hillborrow, a halfling and gnome settlement, was struck real bad before the Battle at Fort Ettin. I’ve been putting those carpentry skills to good use rebuilding homes and community spaces. It’s been simple, honest work, that’s helped ground me after everything.
I say that and I already know you’re worrying Ma. Please don’t. Merla and I — we had a good chat about things. She’s really grown into her role as a fey queen. It’s actually kinda scary how good she is at it. But she is still my sister, your daughter, our family. She understands the best out of everyone what I needed to hear and she was there for me. You should be proud of her.
I was thinking about what she told me and decided to take a job, one in Sigil again. Do you remember me writing to you about Lady Vermillion the last time I went? Well, this job was to help her with a Yuan-ti… well, not “problem” persey. More like, could have been a big problem had I not taken my axe to a door and broken the portal that would have allowed a whole army to invade Sigil. I don’t know what it is with cults and invading but it must be part of the package deal when they’re created. We gathered the intelligence this Lieutenant needed in order to do a proper investigation so I don’t think the Doughnut at the Nexis of the Realms needs to worry about being overrun with snake people. Not that Yuan-ti are bad, but these guys weren’t good.
I was reunited with my friend, Beets, on this job. There was this weird moment when she didn’t recognise me — Oh! Right. I have a beard now! Nothing unruly, don’t worry Berton. But I’m trying something new. I guess you’ll have to wait to see it until I come back for a visit. But Beets didn’t recognise me. Didn’t realise how bad she is with faces. To be honest it was a little awkward, something even the others picked up on. I didn’t know what to do or say, so I kinda just focused on the job. We had a chat afterwards. That was… eye opening. She heard what I had been up to from our friends and got some thoughts in her head that really affected her. I almost don’t know what to do, to be honest. She’s going through something big right now, and I want to be there for her, but I don’t know if I can be in the way she needs.
Anyway, this letter is long enough and I’ve got to get to Daring Heights by tonight. I hope you are all well. I love you and here’s some extra gold Pa, for the bees.
With love,
Marto
