Comrades for Comrades
Co-written with ever humble Kavel
Day 1 after the war; late afternoon. After contemplating all that transpired, after settling in all the thoughts of the event, Derthaad finally rose from the outer balustrade of the western wall of Fort Ettin. The wall he and his friends have defended against the gith horde the night prior. He stood, unburdened by exhaustion even after a full night of endless fighting.
He looked ahead, the sun wasn't high above the horizon. He looked towards the courtyard, some of the adventuring community, after lending some hands in the aftermath, have already left for their cities, eager and afraid for what they may find, while many have stayed behind to rest however they could.
One goliath stood behind.
With a snap of his fingers, Derthaad changed the fiery orange of his sunset cloak to a deep black and descended the wall to his comrade.
Kavel's Corner for Strength and Conditioning had been tidied up. Kruger had just left to get some lunch for him and Kavel. Kavel was just putting the finishing touches to the alterations the goliath pair were making to Kavel's Corner.
Kavel was applying a coat of lacquer to a new wooden sign he had carved for this section of the Training Yard, which read:
'Castiron & Ironstrong Strength & Conditioning Corner'
"Comrade. Good Afternoon. What do you think of the new name,?" Kavel tilted the wooden plaque towards Derthaad, so he could better see it.
"While I was carving this, Kruger made some changes to the two largest stone plates."
Both of the 250lb stone plates had additional engravings near where the weight was carved. The names, 'Tim' and 'Sampson' were carved in with the side profile of a pair of wolf heads.
As he approached the Corner, it could not be helped that a small smile settled on Derthaad's face. Even after such a loss, he did not dally and immediately started doing improvements to his corner he thought.
"They look great, Kavel. Truly"
"What was the weight they challenged you with when we found your bros?"
"It was close to 1,000lbs. These two big plates and a few of the others. Kruger and I felt that with Tim's and Sampson's names carved into the plates, it would feel like they are both still with us, when we squat heavy."
Derthaad closes his eyes and gives a slow nod. "That's good. Although you should have a couple more carved, that way you'd have a set ready for the 1000lbs lift and call it the Iron Strong challenge."
As Derthaad continues, his voice becomes low and soft.
"Kavel, how are you? Want to talk?"
"hmmmm. Yes. I am fine, comrade. How are you doing? What do you want to talk about?" Kavel asked a little curious
Derthaad gives a small sigh "I'm fine Kavel. Honestly, I'm not as affected like others. But, I did not come here for me to talk, I came here in case you want to talk." Derthaad opens his mouth as if to speak, closes it, thinks for a bit and then continues "My condolences for Sampson and Tim."
"Ah. Yes. I see now. Thank you comrade. I appreciate that," Kavel said, slapping one of Derthaad's shoulders.
"I'm lucky," Kavel pointed to the Great Hall, "me and Kruger have each other. In fact, Kruger has really stepped up. You remember how he was when we found him in the Turning Fields forest? He's been getting better. Feeling less sorrowful and less as if he deserves permanent incarceration for what he did when under the control of the bloodlust. Then you remember Kundar? Kruger was back to his old self working on stone. So, when the gith attacked, I was frustrated they ruined something that was good for him. And now those bastards killed his family. Kruger has vengeance on his mind. I was and am still worried about my bro. But, I've found his main attention has been focused on supporting me, and doing things for the Fort. So, if there has been one good thing to come from all this tragedy; it's Kruger's spirit being back."
Kavel paused and smiled, as he remembered something, "Ha. Derthaad. If ever I mentioned your name when recounting an adventure to Tim and Sampson, they would refer to you as the 'sharp plant' wizard. They remembered when you casted Spike Growth, was it? And as hybrid wolves they fell all over the central stairs on your spikey vines and fell from the top of the stairs to the bottom. Clever Magic Mas they would call you. Ha, ha."
Derthaad could not help but snicker at the nicknames he garnered from Kavel's brothers. "I'm glad for Kruger. I'm glad he has regained his strength in body, mind and especially spirit."
Derthaad paused for a bit as if reminiscing "Kavel... I know the feeling. I know what its like to lose your comrades, your brothers. And I know of the sorrow that comes. I also know that can eat away at you." Derthaad takes a deep breath and a slow sigh "But it must not be like that" he continues in a low voice before returning to his previous tone, turning his gaze towards the gate side of the fort. "You can change that sorrow into something else. Kavel, if had them as my brothers, I would feel pride. I would feel pride knowing they bore the name of Ironstrong into battle. That when the sky burned and the earth quaked, they stood their ground against the tide. That when Death came, they laughed in the face of it for they knew they were the strong few who fought in the name of the many."
Derthaad takes another deep breath. "Tell me Kavel, -he continues turning his gaze towards his comrade- what do you feel when you hear their names being spoken?"
"Oh yes. I do feel pride. I felt pride for my bros, Tim and Sampson before yesterday. They are good comrades, good training partners, good brothers. Sampson was one of our mentors, our instructors. Tim was always so strong at conditioning. We spent so much of our lives together, and my strength benefited from their insight, and I was enriched by their friendship. Now, I add their heroic defence of the Fort to the many reasons I am proud to have been in their presence."
Kavel looked at the plates and the freshly engraved names on them; Tim and Sampson. Kavel smiled at the werewolf art Kruger had also added. It seemed to fit those two so well.
Kavel turned his face to look at his dragonborn friend, "I'm going to get stronger comrade Derthaad. There are still more gains to be made. Tim and Sampson... would be so proud of their bro."
"I'm sure that, like you, they already were proud and most likely still are." Derthaad takes a small bow, "And I, comrade, am honoured to have met them, honoured to have help you find all three of them when you did."
"By the way, I saw you talk to Sorrel earlier." Derthaad takes a moment before continuing "How.... how did she take the news?"
Kavel paused to consider the question before answering. How did Sorrel take the awful news?
"Sorrel was... a range of emotions, but also stable. I was to be honest comrade, guilt-ridden that I didn't do enough to help Silvia. I was quite concerned that Sorrel would attack me for not protecting Silvia. But, instead Sorrel wouldn't allow me to feel guilty for not doing more than I did. Sorrel said Silvia is a headstrong woman and made her own decisions. Sorrel was... broken when she heard what killed Silvia. But, she seemed to think more of my sorrow than her own. I think she is going to be fine. She left to go back to the city on her own. In hindsight, I'm not happy with that. But, I did tell her I would come and check up on her soon, after finishing this work here."
Derthaad nods, taking in Kavel's retelling of his meeting with Sorrel. "I know what you feel Kavel. Honestly, I feel guilty too. I kept thinking, maybe I was indeed in range and maybe if I moved quicker, I would have been able to do something. But alas, even with my spells being able to reach farther than most other spell caster can... it happened too quick. By the time I was about to release my Counterspell, it was already over." Derthaad takes in a deep breath, trying to push back the weight of what he also believes to be his failure.
"I also know what you mean about Sorrel. I know the pain she's going through. But... I also know what it means to hold it in." Derthaad takes a small pause, inspecting the expertly chiselled werewolves on the two weights. "Tomorrow morning I'll be leaving early back to Daring Heights and I will also go talk to her at the temple. But not yet, I'll give her some breathing room first. I'm pretty sure that she has received many visits from people giving their condolences. I the meantime, though -" he paused, thinking back at the list of names, of the first one. "I heard the first name on the list. -he continues in a low voice- I'll have to go and talk to Celina, see how she's taking it."
"Well. Like Sorrel said to me, do not beat yourself up for not doing more - you already did a lot yesterday. You are a master at lightning magic, comrade!" Kavel slapped Derthaad on the shoulder to accentuate his statement.
"And, now that you mention it, I didn't realise that that Sammy was that Sammy. Sammy seemed like a nice young man. Please give comrade Celina my condolences, you will likely see her before I will. Oh! And when you are ready and want my help investigating your path; just let me know."
"Thanks, Kavel, I will!" he responds with a pat on the shoulder of his comrade.
