Kavel's walk with Derthaad around the Fort, both inside and out, was revealing. Not just for his dragonborn's confession of a personal matter he needed help on, but the mixture of anger, patriotism, fear and worry. he could feel resonating from other people around Observing people in the Fort, Kavel felt others fluctuate quickly between different emotional states, and if they are not careful they become captive to imprisoning ones like fear and unease.
There were adventurers walking around with confidence and sometimes indifference. This pleased Kavel. This was a state of being that would best serve them well, and was good for any fearful individual supporting the adventurers to see.
As Kavel headed back to Kavel's Corner, he paused. Where is my sister Sorrel? Is she doing her sneaky thing and hiding somewhere? I'll try and find her!
With that idea in mind, Kavel started to slowly approach any object that he felt Sorrel could hide behind. He would tip toe over to stacked crates, and try and quickly peek around the object to catch her, if she was there. But, he was having no luck.
Finally, he decided to head up to the room of the fort to see if could get a view of the whole countryside. And that’s where he found her, leaning in shadow staring out across the dawnlands towards the oncoming city.
A cheeky thought entered the goliath's head, ... does she see me? Could I possibly sneak up on her for a change? I'll give it a go... Kavel began to tip-toe toward Sorrel.
Shhhhhhhh!
Kavel got within fifteen feet of his sister and was stunned. He paused in disbelief. I've actually almost done it!
Five feet away from Sorrel, and still undetected, Kavel again paused, is she tricking me? I guess we'll find out!
Kavel extended a hand forward, and stepped closer to Sorrel. Kavel 'Sneaky Feet' Castiron is about to succeed! and he tapped Sorrel on her shoulder.
Sorrel spun round, her venom blade rising fast as she sidestepped forward under her attackers…. Under Kavel?! Desperately she pushed the sidestep into a slide, hurling herself off balance to avoid plunging the poisoned dagger home. She fell forwards, kicked her leg under her torso and bounced up, turning to face Kavel.
“Impressive work brother, very impressive.”
Stunned was the goliath. "You really weren't pretending not to notice me?" he asked with a little excitement in his voice.
"No," Sorrel smiled. "I could say this and that - oh my mind was on X or the sun was in my eye but... honestly, I'd just be trying to keep my pride. You had me. That's impressive work. The last time someone sneaked up on me was..." she paused for a long time. "I actually can't remember."
She considered him carefully. It wasn't that he had lost muscle. He was as big and strong as ever. But there was a fluidity and grace to his movements and the way he held himself. His balance was lighter. She suspected he was faster. "That MMA shit seems to be working out brother," she nodded.
"It's been very useful against red dragons and killer library machines, I'm sure you'll agree," Kavel places his outstretched hands on Sorrel's shoulders, "anyway, I have some news I'd like to tell you about. But, first; hug for big brother, and you tell me how you've been, and Silvia too," Kavel then reached in to bear hug his human sister.
Sorrel buried her face in Kavel, and threw her arms around him. She could feel her heartbeat slowing and her breathing easing. There was something about him that carried the scent of freshly baked bread or the chill of a summer dawn. Either way, he gave the best hugs.
She stayed there a little too long, as usual, and as he drew away she shook herself briefly. "So, big brother, I have wine and cheese and bread. These ramparts will hold both of us. The day is warm, the enemy is not here yet, so tell me your story, enjoy the sun, drink the wine and let's savour the time we have."
She pulled out and filled two tin cups and as she ripped us the bread and carved the cheese she said, “tell me your news, because I can feel it makes you happy.”
What Makes a Goliath Happy
Oh. Okay then, me first, Kavel thought to himself.
"Well I was in the Feywild. And, I will go through the timeline in a step by step manner, but only after I get to the main point right now. Okay? So, I was at a celebration of sorts. I had to challenge the leader of the Danphenite Tangle to a contest as part of the celebration. You know, hard sparring. She, Nathalie, Walnut, is a very skilled warrior with blades. Also, she is very attractive! When I grappled her to the floor with Stonehand Fighting Technique, your brother's normally singularly focused mind was thinking of other things that can happen between two people at close proximity on the floor... Anyway! We put on a stiff, but good exhibition. The spectators were pleased. And then I heard - well everyone heard - Beets yell out that I should kiss her. And Nathalie said in a more formal way that she'd allow it. So I did. In front of everyone. We then did some private sparring, if you catch my drift, and, and , and we also get to know each other."
Kavel was looking at his sister's face as he prepared to admit the next bit, "and I really like her, Sorrel. She also seems interested in me. I said I would like to come back. She said she'd rather see me sooner than later. What do you think about that? Erh?"
Sorrel beamed and placed her hand on Kavel's vast bicep. "My brother, this is the first time in the year I have known you that you have spoken like this." Her face became stern for a moment. "I hope she's good enough for you. I'm tempted to interview her to establish her intentions and to warn her that if she causes you any heartbreak I will ensure other parts of her are broken."
She ruminated for a second. "But it might be a little early for that. Plus, I don't want to embarrass you. I'm your sister not your mother. Will you see her before all this business?" she waved her hands in the general direction of Gadenthor.
"No. Unfortunately, I think if I did manage to persuade someone to teleport me to the Summer Court, I might return too late for the Dawnland's defence. You know how time works funny in the Feywild."
Kavel wrapped one of his bead arms around Sorrel's shoulders, "but, conditional violence aside, little sister, if me and Nathalie keep discovering joy in our relationship the more we meet, I would want you two to meet. I'm pretty sure you'd like each other."
Sorrel glows inside. This must be what family feels like. "Kavel, I would love to."
She looks out over the plain. "I have fought in more wars than I care to remember," she says distantly. "I have stormed more cities, defended more city walls and I have learned to detach. As an archer, emotion is deadly. Your aim is based on breath and heart beat. Adrenaline sends arrows wide. I am a professional and this is what I do. In certain respects, then, this is a siege like any other. Not my first dragon attack even. But in one respect this war is different. For the first time ever I have skin in the game. I have you. I have Silvia. I have Gerthad and Glint, mad Varga and beautiful Velania. There's Seraphina, Zola, Marto... Suddenly it matters. Not the land, not the walls, not the pride. The people. If it is in my power, you will see her again. If all else is lost, if the walls have fallen and I can find you I have a way to carry you to safety, because love is more important than victory. I finally realise that."
Kavel listened with joy to what his sister just said. She talked of caring for people like family. Kavel has his own word for this; comrades. Family, comrades; it is all the same to Kavel and it pleases him that Sorrel recognises she has that here.
"Good. You have a strong motivation to use your arrow of Slaying then. Good luck with that!"
Sorrel turned to Kavel. “I think, my brother, I will have more use for the wingwear you were kind enough to give me. I hear rumours. My mission may be more complicated than shooting dragons. I don’t know. But listen, on the off chance it is what I think it is, and in the unlikely event that I don’t make it back, I want to thank you for giving me myself back after I’d been lost for years. You have a rare talent, Kavel, which I’m not sure you know, but Nathalie doesn’t know how lucky she is.”
"You are very welcome, Sorrel. I am fond of having a little sister among my comrades, and I would like that to remain so, "Kavel reaches with his other arm to hug his sister, "I am glad we have this little moment before we must only permit our minds to focus on the task at hand," Kavel then held Sorrel at arm length, "if you need anything more from me, just ask. Otherwise, Good hunting Sorrel Darkfire."
"Good hunting Kavel Castiron. Death or glory."
Anyone watching the roof would have been surprised to see the mighty Goliath and the slim ranger turn away from each other, turn back and place their hands on their own hearts then slip into the shadows so that they seemed to just disappear.
