A new wax-sealed letter in Infernal, longer than usual, is delivered to the abandoned townhouse in Port Ffirst.
Father,
An obscure noble family from Faerûn by the name of Von Wald has made a rather surreptitious appearance here in Daring Heights. The daughter, Lady Kyra von Wald, hired four mercenaries, including myself, to aid her in the matter of ensuring her succession in the house.
The House of Von Wald has long been stricken with a curse. I am still not familiar with its nature. According to the Lady, it strikes every member of the family with a kind of madness — except, her ladyship claimed, her own self — and has flung their ancestral home Schloss Wald into the Shadowfell. Their servants and peasants have long perished and they have been living in their castle alone for 200 years, accompanied only by spirits, animated armour, and a flying horse-drawn carriage.
(However, as I write this, I realise that "living" would not be the accurate word that describes their circumstance.)
The heir apparent, Lord Johannes, has turn'd to the fanatical worship of Kelemvor. He believes that the god speaks to him. He intends to kill his siblings, burn down the schloss, erect a church in its place, and then kill himself when he inherits the title. Lady Kyra takes issue with this.
The youngest sibling, Lord Wilhelm, is consumed by melancholia. No one in the family thinks they are fit to rule — not that they themselves seem remotely interested in the prospect.
His Grace the Duke Albrecht is the maddest of them all. He refuses to accept that his wife Isabella is dead and his special affection for Johannes blinds him to Johannes's deranged aspirations, while he denigrates his daughter to her face. There were times where his mind did not seem present and henceforth fail'd to perceive what went on around him.
The previous duke, Gustav, is suspected to be roaming the woods outside the castle as a wailing beast. It is not yet confirmed.
As for Lady Kyra herself — not only does she appear to be the sanest in her family, she is the only one who has ambitions for the House of Von Wald beyond burning it to the ground. Her lord father and lord brother both accuse her of the virtue of being too war-like. Her ladyship is a woman of martial mind. This I cannot fault her for.
Her ladyship paid us handsomely to persuade the Duke that Johannes is not deserving of his inheritance. We achieved that by provoking Johannes into violent rage in front of his father — an eladrin warrior in the party stole his rosary and wore it like a necklace, causing him to assault a guest at the dinner table.
At the crucial moment, I had the wizard conjure an illusion of the late Lady Isabella looking frighten'd by her son's actions, which sent Lord Albrecht into shock. I believe that when His Grace comes to, he will no longer see his son as a worthy successor.
We had to exit the castle in haste as Lady Kyra restrain'd her brother. But I would like to speak with Lady Kyra again someday. I think she has the potential to be a great ally to us and to myself.
The Fallen One's disdain for politics is well-known. Thus it was the methods of machination and manipulation that you imparted on me as a child, Father, that help'd us seize this victory.
Glory, glory.
