AUTHOR’S NOTES:
I’m not entirely sure how well-known the Night Circus is in the Dawnlands, but if you’ve never had the pleasure of visiting this delightful attraction, then sadly, your chance to do so has passed. The circus was devastated during the attack on Kundar with tragic losses in their crew.
For those unaware, the Night Circus was a travelling circus that opened from dusk till dawn. It existed in a sort of liminal space between the planes where everything is rendered in black and white to match the iconic black-and-white striped tents of the circus. Each tent contains a magical sensory experience condition or a wondrous spectacle of acrobatics — both fun and thoughtful.
Whilst they did not sell alcoholic beverages in the circus on account of all the children, I think something of a stiff drink would suit this sombre occasion for the adults amongst us. It is a rich, sweet, smooth, and frothy drink — perfect if you want a chocolatey treat after dinner, though perhaps not something to drink all night long. I chose chocolate liqueur as a nod to the delicious hot cocoa they gave out for free in the circus, and drizzling chocolate syrup on the froth should create the impression of black and white stripes.
If you ever make this cocktail past the hour of dusk, dear reader, drink in the memory of the Night Circus.
One very particular copy of this recipe found its way, curiously, into a stack of reports meant for Queen Nicnevin. Under the Witch-Queen’s gaze, the true message written underneath the innocuous recipe with illusory script is revealed to her:

2nd Mirtul 1499
The githyanki attacked the city of Kundar last night in search of Coll, the Daring Heights City Councillor and proprietor of Fort Ettin whose predicament the Queen has been informed of via the spymaster Lady Elamaris. The Night Circus camped outside the city walls was amongst the casualties of the battle.
I was pulled to the circus that night by the hand of fate. The circus’s resident fortune teller, Miss Celia Brockenhide, had been seeing the same portentous dream for the past 15 nights: a vision of fangs and talons, of fire and silver, and of me and a group of friends, who would survive when others would not. She told the ringmasters, brothers Phantis and Danse, of this but they were dismissive of her concerns. Breaking from the company’s tradition of zero advertisements and announcements, she sent me a black-and-white tarot card — The Tower — that I knew to be from the Night Circus, with “Kundar, 1st of Mirtul” written on it. I took Lady Oziah Daybreaker, Miss Delilah, and Loftarian “Toothy” Agrach-Dyrr with me.
As we were speaking to Miss Brockenhide in the “backstage” of the circus, the assault began. Danse arrived in time to teleport himself and Brockenhide to safety, however the rest of the circus were on their own as 6 or 7 red dragons, ancient and adult, started raining fire on the tents and on the walls of Kundar from the skies. Gith warriors on the ground indiscriminately killed any civilians they could find, demanding to know where Coll is being hidden. The other ringmaster, Phantis, was slain in the battle, and the last of the magic that held the Night Circus together died with him.
My companions and I herded civilians into the Badlands, where I summoned the Archselons and their cadre of conjurers so they could teleport the crowd away, then I took the form of Arauthator, the Old White Death to dance with the dragons in the sky. We held off the attackers from the civilians for as long as we could before we had to retreat to save ourselves. The last sight I saw before teleporting back to Daring Heights was Kundar’s defences slowly but surely repelling the dragons.
The whereabouts of Danse and Brockenhide are unknown at the moment, but I plan to send an invitation to the fortune teller later when things have settled down a little. She may yet be of use to the Dawnlands and to us.
In other news, the mysterious curse afflicting Delilah has become significantly worse as she is now completely insubstantial. Her shadow dragon father Kurtz is still hunting the being known as Lillibut, the Thief of Forms, but it may be a while before we receive any actionable information.
ADDENDUM:
It appears that the Rholor Vuzehk, the High Diviner of the Temple of Selûne in Daring Heights, has gone missing in the midst of a seemingly random bout of carnage that broke out on the temple’s doorstep. Some may suspect the githyanki but I believe this to be the work of a company of Sharran fiends (“The Heralds of Blade and Ash”) who have been wreaking havoc and destruction around Daring Heights, emulating the eternal conflict between the two goddesses on the Material Plane. I have it on good authority that a group of Selûnites, along with an assortment of mercenaries, are actively fighting these fiends. I should expect them to go rescue the High Diviner, or at least try to retrieve his body.
