Glitter Sweet Symphony
... that's life... for a knife-arious villain
Written by Celina Zabinski
One would think it is an average day but no… today is no average day. I have arrived at the location. Almost like I was drawn to it. Taking in my surroundings, I end up staring at the tall castle in front of me. Large pillars and the word ‘Urk’s Cavernous Crypt of Dangers DOOM’ written across the front of it. A message to scare off the weak. The words send a chill down my back. The castle adds to the atmosphere, it’s haunting and dreary. It’s accurate of what a castle is supposed to look like. Staring at it, I get the sense that lots of bad stuff has happened here, it reeks of death. I can sense that it’s this place that’s been calling to me in my dream and I know I was destined to enter.
I look to my fellow adventurers who have also arrived. Bravely accepting the challenge as well. Could they feel it in the air? Did they feel the mysterious calling to them too? I will never know, what I do know is that we’re here to stop whatever it is inside.
Out of the people who arrived, I recognise one brave soul. Anabael who I met previous. I nod remembering how strong and mighty she is. If this is our last fight together then so be it. I get introduced to some new people. Veridian, a tall wizard with a purple coat, great sword on his back and some sort of creature sitting on his shoulder. Vicros, a human, with a long arrow with a handle. Clearly a magic user. And Goop, a small goblin with a grin on his face showing he’s ready for action. He doesn't seem to be afraid. A brave brave soul. Everyone can feel it in the air, we look around at each other wondering if today was going to be our last day. Will we be ever be able to escape this doom if we enter? Or perish under its mercy. We must try…
Suddenly out of nowhere comes a voice billowing from the darkness
“Adventurers come! Are you ready to enter the cave of wonder? Ready to fight the evil Barron and put a stop to his evil plans. For all have tried but none have succeeded. Will you be so lucky?”
I can just about make out a shape, but the voice grows smaller and the shape also disappears. All of us are left puzzled. A threat has been made. But we also have an invitation to enter… How long has the evil Barron been watching us? He must already know we’re here… I decide then and there that I will put a stop to this Barron if it’s the last thing I do. This must be the evil calling to me. We bravely march in, the whole time keeping our guard up. Unexpectedly, Veridian find a bright blue stone in his hand. Could this be a clue to solving this mystery? Or a trap set by the deadly Barron? Only time will tell… I pray we won’t be too late.
We enter a room and with a loud clang, the doors slam shut and we are trapped. Looking around it is clear to me that we have entered into a dangerous room. Heavily armoured soldiers appear out of nowhere and launch a ferocious attack on our group. I think to myself, today is not the day I die and I’ll be damned if they take me alive. I hurl one of my magic apples at one of the assailant. I scream “You’ll never take me alive”. With my apple, I nearly take the soldier down but the enemy is too strong and they get back up again. I am furious that we have walked into a trap with so many soldier. With all the energy I can muster, I dart towards one of the soldiers and attack with my rapier. However, the enemy is too quick and avoids my every move. My allies quickly make their way to the other soldiers and begin our defence. Vicros has a plan and he finds a long piece of rope and throws it towards me. Ideas start forming in my mind, I shall restrain one of the soldiers and make them our hostage. It is clear that my allies are quickly overpowering the enemies. We have found their weakness and are taking them down easily. I throw the rope around the enemy in front of me and manage to restrain them. It was a long struggle but I managed to hold them down. They won’t be escaping any time soon.
With all the enemies defeated in the room, I was the only one with a prisoner.
“Tell us where the Barron is. Your friends have been defeated. You have nothing else. Tell us now”, I roar toward my prisoner. They quickly glace towards another door at the back of the room, they start sweating “I will never tell”. My allies notice this as well and start moving towards the back of the room. I stare into the eyes of my enemy for a long time, I know there is nothing I can say to get this person to talk more. They have been brainwashed by the Barron. Too loyal a subject. Nothing more I can do for them. “If you won’t tell me anything, then you are of no use to me”. I quickly stab the prisoner and watch them bleed out. I wipe the blood of my blade and follow my allies into the next room. Knowing the Barron, things are only going to get tougher from here.
The next room, is more mysterious. Five raised steps lined up on the floor and in the middle of the room lay a golden shiny chest. I can see the room is filled with booby traps. We must be careful. As I start to move further into a room, a flying arrow wizzes by my head landing into the wall behind me. That was a close one. If I take any more wrong footings and I know I am going to be killed instantly. It’s a dangerous room. Staring at the chest I can tell, there is clearly something we need from inside it. If the Barron has something held there, we must get it. He will be stopped. With my allies we come up with a plan. We carefully make our way over to the raised step on the group, and we agree for each of us to try standing on one at the count of 3. We believe the Barron didn’t expect us all to work together. Work as a team work. His weakness. What would he know. So, we bravely take the risk. On the count of 3, we all stand on our step and surprisingly it works. We survive and we hear the sound of the chest opening. Inside it is a large golden key. We take the key and make our way to the next room. You have not bested us yet, Barron.
We use the key we found, to open the next door.
As we enter the room, I immediately get hit by how different it is to the last one. It’s much darker than the last one and there’s lot of tiles which line the back of the room. The tiles appear to be floating in the air above a pit. Looking down the pit looks extremely deep. How far down… no one knows. It looks like if you fall, you could be falling forever and ever. A horrible ending. Vicros decides to investigate the tiles and Anabael assists him. As Vicros takes a step forward on one of the tiles, it gives way and drops. Just before Vicros is about to fall, Anabael quickly catches him from behind in enough time and pulls him back up. A close call from death. Veridian is the first to work out that we need a specific pattern to cross the tiles and Vicros notices that some of the tiles underneath are written in dwarvish. If we figure out the right phrase we can make our way across. Vicros says he thinks he know what the phase is since he can speak dwarvish and he starts making his way across the tiles. With each step we hold our breath. All of us expecting him to fall but somehow he doesn’t. He’s doing great, however he’s on his own. As Vicros makes it about half way, he takes another step but this time the tile completely goes from under him. No one else is around him. No one else can catch him. He slips down into the darkness and is gone.
“Nooooo”, I roar out and slam my fist into the ground. I let out a small tear. The Barron has claimed too many lives. Vicros didn’t deserve a death like that. Veridian stares out to where Vicros fell and says he knows where he went wrong. Veridian then selflessly walks forward and tries to complete the impossible puzzle. The rest of us stare from the distance. Watching and hoping that another one of us does not fall victim to the Barron. Veridian makes it to where Vicros fell, he looks down and can see nothing of our ally. He looks to the floor tiles and take another step in a different direction. He moves, we watch nervously wondering if the tile will drop. But it stays. We all cheer. Veridian continues on. He manages to make it to the end. Once he does the whole room changes colour and a platform opens up across. Guiding us towards another new door at the back of the room. How many doors are in the place… no one knows?
Suddenly there’s a strange sound followed by loud coughing and a weird blobby shape appears. It’s Vicros. He gets pushed forward from a gooey substance he appears to have been trapped in. He reeks of fish but he’s alive. He isn’t sure what happened exactly down where he was. It doesn’t matter though, he’s alive. The Barron didn’t win this one. We all cheer and move into the next room.
In the next room, I can see lots of unstable wooden beams which if followed would lead to a path to a door at the back of the room. It looks like this is to test our team work and dexterity. I start to question how of my allies will cope with some of these dodgy looking beams. Then suddenly Veridian has another idea. He focuses all his energy and starts concentrating the power into the ground. As he starts walking forward pieces of wood and metal begin flying towards him and start forming a bridge. It’s holding and it’s quite impressive. Everyone follows after him and we successfully manage to get across the room. As we approach the door, I can make out that there’s a slide which leads into the next room. One of the Barron’s tricks. I dart forward and heroically go first down. My allies have sacrificed too much already. It’s my turn to give back. If I die, I died with honour.
I get down and I can make out that I’ve entered an extremely large room. I glance around and notice the room is filled with even more heavily armoured soldiers and at the very centre of the room is a large brownish coloured dragon. I hold back my panic and I look further into the room. And there, right at the very back of the room I finally spot the elusive Barron. He is just sitting there smiling at everyone making their way into the room. As we all gather ourselves in to the room, he looks to all of us.
“So you made it past my traps. However, you will not defeat me. Many have tried but none have been successful. For I am the Barron Urk”, he says with must confidence.
I stare the Barron down.
“You will never get away for all your wicked crimes Barron. I will defeat you”, I roar with all my strength.
The Barron is pure evil… I can feel it radiating in the air. He has done many notorious things. He must be stopped. I dart forward. The Barron is mine. I tuck and dodge attacks. However, one of the soldiers spot me and we engage in battle. The soldier pulls something from his pocket and throws it in my face. Poisonous dust. I start coughing loudly, gasping for air. I focus all my strength and I manage to overcome the dust. I quickly disarm my opponent. I take their weapon and use it to stab them. They die instantly. The dragon goes to attack me in revenge and I quickly dodge out of its way. The Barron makes his way over to us. I take my opportunity and I launch myself at the Barron. I use my new sword to attack him. I go straight for his chest. He blocks me. Then he pulls out more powder and launches it at my face. I am blinded. I scream out in rage and swing wildly around me hoping faith will let me find the Barron and end all of this.
“I will find you Barron”, I roar out hoping to intimidate. Suddenly, my vision comes back and I can see again. Just in time to see the Barron go to attack me with his great sword. It hits me once but it misses. I jump as the dragons tail tries to knock me down. It fails. Nothing can stop me. I hold my sword above my head and roar “You are done Barron”. With a swift jab, I launch my sword down and plunge it straight into his heart. With his dying breath he whispers “This isn’t the end”. He falls to the side and I see the light disappear from his eyes. Goop manages to slice into the dragon with a magical sword he found and cuts the dragons in half and it dies. I look around the room and see my allies have managed to fight off everyone in this room. I smile proud of our team. Knowing that we did good work today defeating such an evil. I can feel the evil energy leave the room. The threat is no more.
The Barron is dead!!!
Celina smiles at herself as she finishes writing her last word. That was a fun day. She’s sure she’d written this story how the little goblins would want the story to be told. She gets flashes of entering the clearly temporary constructed castle and the handwritten sign out front. The multiple goblin soldiers she encountered, in their cardboard box ‘heavy-armour’. The wooden and spongey swords they used for fighting that did no damage. The glitter that was thrown at her many times and the cardboard dragon hanging from the ceiling throwing more glitter at people. It was a fun experience, which she would recommend to everyone she knows. She smiles at the medal she received at the end of the fight. She had no intention of actually killing these tiny goblins in real life. She gave them a show, which is what she wanted to do as well. When the Barron joined them at the end again, she gave him a massive round of applause. She has fun fake killing him. He apparently loved our group and didn’t expect actual adventures to turn up. The other goblins who played the soldiers also joined excitedly and wanted to talk to all of us. They were so thankful for us fake killing them and were happy how everything went. Celina decided to hang around to chat to the little goblins and offers suggestions on future ideas for rooms in the future. It’s a fun idea after all. Maybe they could use some apples in one of their next rooms in future?
