Dearest Root,
Today I took it upon myself to help a very gentle person with her love life. Velania is, I believe, what clerics are supposed to be. She’s almost enough to reconsider one’s religious views. But most importantly, she’s kind. And I wanted to repay her for her kindness.
I had the best intentions at heart. If only I knew it would all end in tragedy…
It started so well! Velania and Coll met at the Fort, and, at Aurelia's behest, several adventurers, including myself, kept them company for security reasons. What with the whole Gadenthor being inside Coll's head...
We were having a picnic on the Evenbloom Hill. It’s all covered with flowers that bloom at sunset. It reminded me so much of our outing under the Sunset Lilypads. You looked so beautiful in the last glimmer of sunlight…
The fairies inhabiting the hill have graciously allowed me to take one of these flowers. They are purple, gentle and magical, and remind me of you. So I'll bring it to you the first chance I get.
The same fairies us over to tell stories. They've had a visitor from the Court of Harmony, Qirliria the Bright, a beautiful crested moonstone dragon. She told us a rousing story about bees defeating a dragon. Quite fitting in retrospect. Florian told a story of Sune, the great divine lover. He illustrated it with fire sculptures. It was beautiful. Beets told a story of her own home. It was incredibly sad. Her father was killed while she was fighting off the attackers. How… uncomfortably prophetic that she decided to tell that tale. I also rose to the occasion, more in the effort to raise the spirits after a touching, but not very uplifting tale. I told the story of my parents. Rage meeting the abyss, and both cancelling each other out. If only all stories ended like theirs… with a lovely home and three kids…
We were so entranced by the stories that we haven’t noticed two wyverns. The same gith warriors we’ve seen in Gadenthor. Before we could do anything they swooped in, one got Coll, and they took off!
Qirliria allowed me and Velania ride her as we were chasing the githyanki. Beets could fly on her own, and the fairies cast Fly on Florian and Dwhirian.
We caught up to them fairly quickly through a combination of aerobatics and optical illusions. I summoned Bigby’s hands and grappled one of the wyverns. Dwhirian caused a storm, blinding the beast and its riders. Unfortunately, it was not the one carrying Coll. Florian summoned two eagles to peck at the other wyvern, and then summoned lightning to hit the first one. It went down like a rock. Dwirhian and Velania both hit at the wyvern with all they had. Dwhirian grabbed Col’s arm and was struggling to pull him away. I was too busy trying to counterspell one of the wyvern riders attacking us. Trying to, because he was cancelling my counterspell. Then I noticed Beets hitting at Coll’s shackles. Those were simple shackles, they didn’t look like they would shrink or grow with Col in them, so… I only wanted to help, I swear! All I was thinking about was Velania and her budding love, and how I wanted to help my friend, and I wanted to help her save her loved one…
I shouted to Col not to resist, and I turned him into a swallow. Why didn’t I go with a hawk? They are so much sturdier. He started to fall out of the shackles, and the wyvern, probably feeling the loss of a weight, swiped at him. Unfortunately, Dwhirian has already let go of Col to let him fly. Swallows are so fragile… like people… the beast got him in one go. I tried that thing I could do after training with the Jackal, to no avail. The wyvern was holding his human form when Florian finished it off. They both plummeted to the ground. Florian started to resurrect Coll as soon as we've landed. The ritual worked, but what awoke wasn’t Coll. His voice became mechanic and alien. Last time we spoke he told me about the voices of Gadenthor in his head. I believe what awoke in Col’s body WAS Gadenthor. Damn that place.
And so, instead of chaperoning a date I observed yet another tragedy. Velania is a rock - she’s taken it as a challenge in her path. Although I would like to stay with her a bit longer to make sure she’s okay.
All this trouble also reminded me... of many things. But mostly - how much I miss you. I can't stay away from you any longer. I hope to see you in a week's time.
Yours,
Glint.
