The Adventure that Was Easily Avoidable,
literally,
I mean it,
we were warned like three times,
In which a wizard is dying (and it only gets worse), a barbarian teleports all over the place, and a pawnshop owner and a thief heal aggressively.
Found Veridian in Fort Ettin, arguing with a red-skinned tiefling. There was a huge formless leech with lots of mouths on the table next to them.
"I don't care about the artefact!" I heard Veridian saying.
I couldn't stand by while such sacrilege was spoken, so naturally, I butted in.
The leech, named Vexillius, said we could kill it. I checked. He lied. He was unkillable while a bit of some really cool armour was stuck in him. So he suggested we go to Avernus to retrieve the armour, a sword, and a spellbook. He was clearly lying, as Mace, the tiefling, told us. I put my flail on top of the leech.
"Listen, it's an obvious trap. We're not saying no to it, we just want to know what it is," I asked reasonably.
"Okay, okay, just put the flail away!" Vexillius bitched. "I'm going to attempt to get the armour and the sword and kill you all. But you can take me down, right? There's a pool of lava, it's going to be a glorious fight!"
"See, that wasn't so difficult!" I nodded approvingly.
Veridian wasn't keen on going because it was a trap. Myself and Mace tried to persuade him that we should go and raid the place, and naturally everything was a trap – that's the adventuring life, after all. Wren appeared out of nowhere. They were a bit ambivalent if we should go or not, and were just there to support Veridian, but agreed that this was the only way to kill the leech. So in the end we won the wizard over and travelled to Avernus.
There was indeed a river of lava, and a bridge over it. Vexillius donned the armour and took the flaming sword. It was indeed really cool. A small orchestra of imps turned up and started playing battle music. It started out great.
With a fierce battle cry, I ran forward and began flailing at Vexillius. Although the armour looked pristine after every hit, I could hear he was suffering inside of it.
Veridian attempted to polymorph him into a worm, but failed. Wren and Mace were both shooting at him. It was a lot of fun. Then that coward ruined everything.
Vexillius ran off to the other edge of the chasm, summoned a smaller demon to fight in his stead, and two knights on nightmares. I tried stopping one with spike growth, but turned out nightmares can fly. I got really angry and cut off the head of the demon in front of me in one fell swipe, getting to that coward Vexillius. I got a couple of hits in when Mace shot him through the gap in the armour that its previous owner was killed through.
I turned back. Wren, Veridian and Mace were fighting the nightmare knights. They were very imposing – covered in armor, brandishing huge lances. I wasn't scared of them, more… well, despaired. Weirdly enough. It didn't feel like we could do anything to them.
I couldn't make myself get any closer to them, but I had to help the others. Especially Mace, who now stood one-on-one against a knight. And he was just a shop owner in Port Ffirst, like Celina. He was already on one knee, coughing blood. So, I used the halo knife the Lady of Pain gifted us and teleported to stand next to Mace. Hit the knight a couple of times, giving the tiefling time to retreat.
"You've got this one, I believe in you!" He said, and I flailed at the knight with renewed effort.
Wren started shining from the inside. Veridian turned into a planetar to fight the other knight, but with three attacks, the demon quickly broke his concentration and pierced him through. He shot a disintegration ray at the knight, but the demon was surprisingly nimble and dodged it.
The knight in front of me healed himself, and got his horse to kick me. At the same time, the other knight delivered a killing blow to Veridian, and he went down. Wren healed him immediately. I sighed with relief – at least they had it under control.
I hit my knight as strong as I could, and he returned the favour. The second knight downed Veridian again. It was Mace's turn to heal him, with a strange song that reminded me of Faust a bit. Are all tieflings bards? Need to ask Celina if she can sing.
By the time the second knight downed Veridian for the third time, I realised we didn't have it under control.
Wren's glow started looking like a light show, flickering between brightness and twilight hew. They kept Veridian alive, but just barely.
I kept flailing at my knight, giving it all I've got, every other hit harder than the one before. Mace delivered the killing blow. The nightmare didn't particularly care about his rider dying, and kept fighting me. It wasn't as strong, so I chanced a look at the ledge where the knight was stabbing at Veridian yet again.
The wizard gave up on getting up at this point. He just lay there, hands behind his head, and turned to the knight who kept stabbing him with his spear like Veridian was a pin cushion.
"Fuck you, I'm immortal!" the wizard spat, blood covering his lips, and lost consciousness yet again.
Wren looked completely exhausted from aggressively healing Veridian for the past couple of minutes. Mace was a bit too far. So it was up to me. I sighed, left the nightmare in peace, teleported to stand between the knight and Veridian, and squeezed some of my Autumn's Warmth's goodberries into Veridian's mouth.
"There, and stay up this time, will you?!" I said, irritated.
"What do you think I'm trying to do here?!" Veridian replied in exactly the same tone.
My maneuvers distracted the knight enough for Mace to line the final shot. Despite all our enemies being dead, Veridian was downed again, this time by their horses. Wren killed one of them, and I, completely fed up, broke the back of another with my flail. Mace used the last of his magic to heal up the very down-trodden and very annoyed Veridian.
We pacified him a bit by giving him a flaming sword for his planetar form, and a cool-looking banner. The armour went to Port Ffirst's collection, and Wren got a couple of mean arrows. They presented Mace with a ring, and they seemed to have parted on rather amiable enemy terms. And I was just left thinking if the fiends are as cool as it first looked. Maybe it's just Rahmiel.
