Freshly arrived back from Arva (via Kundar), Ana was keen to face her fears - of more than one kind. As soon as she'd said her goodbyes to her travelling companions, Goop and Gerard, and checked in to the Three-Headed Dragon, she stride straight over to Samed's Smithy.
She was greeted with a warm smile, and a firm handshake. She went up to the dwarf whom she had hurt accidentally last time, and apologised profusely, handing over a second of the intricate metallic discs that she bought from the market in Aylan Vondar before they went back through the teleportation circle. They seemed to flinch slightly as she did so - but managed a small smile of acknowledgement all the same, as she explained that she would start her cover shift for them next week.
The remaining days passed without incident, and Ana managed to earn enough to pay for her good room, and some particularly generous portions of food and drink at mealtimes, as well as a few snacks from various street vendors.
She meditated each morning and evening on Vanya's advice.
On the third night, she started to drift off...
---------------------
She was back home, and it was winter. She found herself walking down the path to the Wise-Woman's house in the woods near her village back home.
She went to knock, but we she did the door swing open, and the woman stepped out. Oddly enough, she looked a little bit different: her eyes a little bluer than And remembered, and some of her other features and mannerisms oddly reminiscent of Vanya's.
"Come, let us walk and talk about what's on your mind"
---------------------
"Before I learned to get some control over it, as a child I was often prone to great tempers - as you know. If another child would tease me (or even worse tease one of my friends) then sometimes, before I knew it, they were in the floor and there was blood on my fists. What happened in between, is hazy, but I remember a sort of fire in my muscles that gave me strength, but also a chill that ran all over, which scared me...
My parents also began to notice a pattern that on the same night as those... events .. I would often be stuck down with a hot & cold fever ... once the anger has passed and faded away.
Fortunately, it was about then that I discovered my love of poetry and music. By thinking on a melody, a saga, even a battle hymn, I could ease that part of my mind and keep that other part of me at a greater distance ... most of the time.
But I'm still scared now - while awake, and in my dreams - of the cold, cold feelings of anger and hatred that arise when I see injustice in the world, or people mistreating others - especially those that I love."
---------------------
"Like the creatures of these lands, you need to learn to accept the snow and the ice. Not in your heart - that must stay warm, but on and outside of your body instead.
The wolves, the bears - yes they have their thick fur coats and hide - but that isn't to deny the elements, it's so they can roam freely without fear that the world will suck away their warmth. When they stalk their pray, they sometimes even find that wearing a coat of snow can be to their advantage.
You need to learn to control your anger, and to embrace it as a coat that you put on when needed, with the confidence that you can take it off again without ending up trapped inside.
When you're angry, others might think that this changes who you are, but inside that coat you will know differently. You will know that it's still you - your body, your heart your soul. Your passion to make this world a better place can continue to glow - like the fire at home in your hearth, or a good swig of spiced cider... speaking of which, it's about time that we went inside.
Learn to keep a cool head alongside your hot-blooded instincts, and I'm sure that everything will be just fine."
