Firelight glitters off cut crystal as Coll holds the goblet up to the light, brow furrowed. Having an army of invisible servants to take care of your every domestic need was all well and good, but when it comes down to it, sometimes you just can’t beat a bit of elbow grease. He muses idly that this is a good metaphor for magic in general: fast? Sure. Convenient? Definitely. But it tended to lack detail, the finesse that comes only with a lifetime of experience.
Sighing contentedly, he sets down the spotless glass and is just reaching for the next when he hears the familiar popping sound of a portal opening and closing in his drawing room.
“Jenna? Do you need something? I thought you -”
His words cut off as an enormous figure looms in the doorway, his heart leaping briefly into his mouth before the figure steps fully into the room and resolves into the huge and bespectacled frame of Oriloki Manyvoices, Arcane Auditor (2nd Rank) of the High Council of The Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors. The pale glow of two circles tattooed onto his biceps is fading as he pushes his half moon spectacles up his nose.
“Good evening, Councillor. You have my most profound apologies for this highly irregular intrusion, however the news I bear is both urgent and particularly pertinent to yourself.”
Coll blinks a few times.
“Ahh…ok. What is it?”
The towering Goliath gives a politic smile before gesturing to an armchair.
“May I sit down?”
Coll nods, a bemused smile flickering across his face as the enormous wizard wedges himself into the seat. The barman turned councillor looks up at him expectantly.
“Ah, yes, the details. You will be aware that I have stationed one of my simulacra with the expedition to explore Gadenthor headed by your brother, Cecil. Well, Secundus was supposed to check in a few days ago, but failed to do so. I sent Tertius to investigate, and the camp from which the expedition were operating has been abandoned. There were signs of a struggle. I tried contacting each of the members of the party individually by magical means and was unable to make a connection. In short, your brother and my colleagues are missing, possibly dead, in the ruins of an ancient city.”
Coll is still for a long moment, his visitor shifting uncomfortably in the armchair. Finally, he nods, stands up, and walks into the other room. When he returns he carries a pair of fine but well worn
leather boots.
“Councillor? What do you intend to do?”
Coll looks up from tying the laces.
“Well, first I’m gonna put on my boots. Then I’m gonna find some of the nastier adventuring types - possibly the ones with the biggest bar tabs. And then-”
He straightens, a steely look in his eye.
“Then I’m gonna find my brother.”
