A letter delivered by a terrified and very tired pigeon to a small gaul gaunt village on the Spine of the World in Faerun.
Dear dad,
I went on my first proper raid in Kantas yesterday! I know it’s been awhile, but honestly, most places here are so poorly defended raiding them would be an offence to any warband member's intelligence. In the end we had to go to the Underdark to find something to raid. It was me, Oziah, with whom we went to that stupid cave where Langston killed Faust; Igrainne, whom I knew from before but kept confusing with Tinuviel; and two new people – Wren, who’s good with the bow, and Veridian, who is so unlucky even you’d be convinced he actually needs his magic to survive.
We raided an illithid train for a propulsion system. We did the cool jumps from a cliff onto the roof of the moving train. Just like you and your mates did when you got the Tearjerker from that dwarven caravan! Igrainne and Veridian overshot, but in the end, everyone scrambled up on the roof.
Then we fought some mind flayers and the back of the train. Well, Veridian was fighting the back of the train when he wasn’t fighting gravity and trying to keep on top of the train. Wren and Igrainne were fighting the mind flayers. Me and Oziah went down. As we lied there, taking stock of our lives, train gently rocking beneath us from Veridian's spells hitting it, I’ve had a revelation.
“You know what?” I told her. “I figure you and me aren’t that great with caves!”
She probably agreed, because she looked very annoyed at hearing me say that. We both collected ourselves, got up, and finished off those stupid illithids. The end of the train almost finished off the train with disintegrate spells. Veridian blew up something inside and it stopped. I don’t know if he did it on purpose. But we got our loot: a propulsion system, and a drow lady from Aeschira whom the mind-flayers had been controlling. I didn’t want her, but Igrainne insisted we take her with us, so we did.
The illithid we were helping used the propulsion from the train to go into the sky. I wished them well. So if one day when you go to the Eternal Battlefield you meet an illithid there – name’s Pariahty, nice chap.
It was a fun trip. Igrainne got a new toy – like a whip with several tails. We all got loads of money we looted from Pariahty’s cave. The drow lady had her freedom. I had loads of fun.
Hope you’ll get to join us on a raid one day! How’s raiding homeward? Still mostly dwarves or are you diversifying?
Strikes and curses,
Varga.
