Four years of blissful freedom. Four years of heaps of gold, skeins of silk, bejeweled everything, all won or lost by twist of fate. Running around Huzuz to earn a fortune and reputation was a dream come true to Vox. But we all wake up from dreams eventually.
“The Fable mutinied and we lost. Your mother did not make it. The plan was always to collect you when we could, when we had enough to give true freedom, but that’s no longer possible. Come to Kantas. I can’t promise you anything but your mother’s belongings, a warm place to sleep, and opportunity in relative obscurity. It may not be as glamorous as Zakhara, but at least you wouldn’t have to run.
Think about it,

“So that’s why I’m here. It’s the classic tale of an abandoned kid who gambles their way to financial security only for their slightly less terrible parent to kick the bucket. And they set off on a whirlwind adventure to reconnect with their deceased parent through said parent’s strictly platonic first mate.” Vox explained, leaning precariously on the gunnel.
The halfing captain of the Uncanny Robin looked unconvinced. “Sure, a tale as old as time. And the 200 gold that came with the letter had nothing to do with it?”
Vox pushed their sunglasses up, turning to face the approaching harbor. “A happy coincidence, Captain.”
“Sure kid.” The Captain tossed back as the bosun shouted for all hands on deck. “You’re not the youngest person I’ve ferried across the sea, but you do look in need of a friend.”
“Are you going to adventure across Kantas with me, Captain?”
The Captain pulled a letter and a silver coin from her pocket and gently enclosed them in Vox’s hands. “May the coin bring you good luck and the letter a friend.”
Vox looked at the stuff in her hands. “So…is this a religious thing? Do I burn this?”
“Daft child.” The captain snorted, warmth evident in their voice. “The coin is a token of Tymora. She favors bold little things like you. Just keep that close when you’re feeling short on luck.” The captain sighed and escorted Vox to the gangplank. “As for the letter… The last time I saw this port, I saw my sister off on her own adventure.”
“Did she die?”
“What? No!” The Captain walks off the ship with Vox, head shaking. “No, she’s doing well for herself from what I hear. Is even building herself a little house. If you ever need a friendly face, go to New Hillborrow and give that letter to my sister, Jacinta.”
“I’m probably going to see how much money I can take from these suckers. But I’ll drop by. Thanks for the ride, Captain Montajay. “
Vox stepped onto the docks of Port Ffirst, feet pointed towards the Cavernous Seashank. A room, and a friend, would be waiting for them…
