Jaezred Vandree and Delilah Daybreaker like this
Post by Wren Lunaboult on Nov 19, 2021 0:00:50 GMT
Report Dated: 12th Uktar 1498
Objective:
Investigate reports of missing persons within the Underdark of the Feywild, Summer Court i.e. the Feydark. Request sent by Lord Emmantiensien.
Team:
Myself and Stripes
Jaezred
Delilah and Beastie
Heret
Details:
Team gathered by Portal Plaza to bolster on food before departing via teleportation to the Summer Court as requested.
Initially greeted only by the forest of the Summer Court, but soon became apparent that we were actually in the presence of a treant. Treant was our employer, Lord Emmantiensien, an elm whose leaves glittered prismatic colours in the shifting light.
Informed of nature of Feydark. It’s expansive, connected in places to the Underdark of the Material Plane, and an assortment of people have been lured into it never to be seen from again. Also informed us that some have been able to resist the ‘call’ of a voice at first, but eventually they also disappeared into the Feydark too.
The disappearances had an unpredictable frequency, with a range of residents of the Summer Court having been lured in. Those who had been seen to go in were also uncontactable by magical means.
Escorted by a quickling to the entrance to Feydark used by missing persons, a rocky outcropping with partially hidden hole leading down. Advised to follow the mushrooms to find the way.
Team descended after providing Heret with means to see in the pitch black darkness. Descended into large tunnel system connected to many caves with occasional presence of mushrooms. At approx. 1.5hrs into journey all members of team mentally contacted by unnerving voice trying to joyfully persuade us to continue on our journey, the voice did not stop speaking until noted in this report.
Heret mentioned he noticed similarities to what happened in Stoneleaf, where a mining operation distrubed mind flayers hidden in deep tunnel systems. Jaezred also agreed that this was likely mind flayers. I had to take their word as I had not heard of them before, but their descriptors did allow me to also draw the similarities to our current situation.
Team continued on for approx. 2hrs following the mushrooms as instructed. Noted that these were now getting larger in size and appearing more frequently as we continued. The voice also getting louder and more persistent.
Soon arrived in large open cavern, this contained even more mushrooms now of humongous size and even more vibrant in colour. No creatures to be seen or heard in here. Team spotted amongst the fungi a humanoid figure sitting there, motionless and covered in mushrooms.
Team notices insistent voice has suddenly stopped, and then it let out an unholy scream in our minds. It seemed to only fully affect Jaezred, who gained the sudden urge to move further into the cavern hastily. Rest of team followed on high alert to learn of source of voice through Jaezred. Noticed more humanoid bodies further, some looked sustained by the mushrooms growing on them, but the ones further in were certainly dead and the brain gone.
Was some great concern when Jaezred displayed sign of injury on his back, fearing it was caused by what was down here I cast a spell of protection. This alleviated his haste to walk further in. Delilah investigated the way Jaezred had been heading, finding running water fed by a waterfall beyond an ancient archway.
Voice had returned, revealing it was reading our recent memories. Upon entry through archway it turns to mockery as we find it’s source. A pulsating brain attached to the ground beneath it, mushrooms like the ones we were following are aggressively growing on it, surrounding the creature in a cloud of spores. Between us and this brain were several mind flayers and a measurable distance. The mind flayers seemed manic in their movements and were also covered in mushrooms.
Multiple targets to take down.
As team moved to engage with the targets, Jaezred keeled over and grew spider legs from his back. It looked painful. This did not stop him from lobbing large fire spells at the targets. Delilah moved up to engage in close combat, while Heret and myself supported with longer range. Attacking these mind flayers caused them to release debilitating spores again and again.
After eliminating closer targets, we moved up towards the brain but it’s long reaching tendrils momentarily took down both Heret and Delilah. Managed to heal them back up temporarily but my magic is very limited. Team was feeling brunt of fight but all targets were eliminated.
Upon its final exhale brain said “We know where the tear is. We’ll be coming for it.”
With this information team continued on, Delilah finding a tunnel odd in the fact that wind seemed to be blowing in from it.
She continued on in, scouted out a cave which had seen a recent massacre of mind flayers and more of the mushrooms. She retreated and team moved through tunnel and subsequent cave system together. Others inferred this was the Underdark of the Material Plane, perhaps the tear in the planes that the brain mentioned. A town of mind flayers were present further in, team retreated without drawing attention to our presence. Mushrooms were torched in our retreat.
Reported our findings to Lord Emmantiensien back in the Summer Court.
Conclusion:
Source of disappearances in Summer Court discovered and eliminated. Mission success.
P.S. As you probably inferred from this report Mum, I have gained some magical abilities recently. I found some faith while I’ve been out here. It’s not in Selune like you, but in Ilmater. I hope you approve.
