Continued from Entr'acte 7.
It was a risky move. Jaezred knew almost for certain now that Langston Farstep and Jack had been spying on the adventuring community. But he figured that Imryll would not be able to give him the answers he needed anytime soon, so that left him with no choice but to go to Daring Academy.
He had divided the stabilising sands equally between himself and Imryll before leaving the Mountain Palace. Then he called in a favour with Adrexa Nuzinshex, the tall and sharply-dressed white dragonborn housekeeper of the Cottonfoots, whose imposing presence persuaded the scholars of the Academy into granting him private access to their records. One generous donation to their research fund later, they were likewise persuaded into silence.
However, he was aware, whilst walking into the archives, of how out of depth he currently was. Academic research had never been his strong suit, and that was made even more apparent over the course of the next few days as he stumbled hopelessly into one rabbit hole after another, only to run face-first into dead ends. His insistence on concentrating on detect magic all the while (in case a disguised intruder or one shrouded in invisibility crept up on him) did not help in the least. This was one of the moments where Jaezred wished he had put more effort into school, to have both endured the beatings and tried to be good at something, instead of doing just one of those things.
He made one small discovery when he decided to put the sand under the strange device sitting in the room — a device consisting of an oil lamp, a flask of water, a small lens, and a large, tube-like thing with a tapered end and an eyepiece on the other end. It was used to look at the most miniscule objects in great detail, usually biological samples. As he staged a pinch of the sand and looked through the eyepiece, he saw that the “sands” were, in fact, tiny metal shavings.
Curious.
The exact type of metal was indeterminable at this stage, and Jaezred felt he had overstayed his welcome at the archives anyway. He chose to leave it there for now and try again another time with fresh eyes.
