Week 43, 1498
25th of Marpenoth
I hate when good weeks end up badly.
Last week started decent, my superior finally stopped busting my nuts over not being present in the lamia expedition. I read from Kavel's report that it went horribly, got ambushed by jackalweres, the lamia's minions, and were thus forced to retreat before getting any solid information regarding the lamia's whereabouts. If the issue escalates, the commander will no doubt issue a full Watch investigation regarding this lamia problem. From the information Kavel has provided, it seems that a decent part of the problem has been solved since the jackalweres were the ones luring adventurers in. However, I have a feeling that the lamia itself will try and recruit more into its ranks once it has found out that the influx of adventurers has dropped.
From the time being though, things look well.
Later in the week, as my and my investigating partner, Masayoshi, were having lunch at The Hung Rabbit we needed up in another adventure. Purely by coincidence. Which is great since my poor sap of a partner has been ignoring these in the past month. The coincidence is that we met up with Tayz, Kavel and Kelne, and one of Tayz and Kavel's acquaintance by the name of Levuka. She's a druid who has commissioned an armor made from the hide of a T-rex (more like someone who got permanently polymorphed into a T-rex and went rampant), however Lara Layland, the one commissioned, has gone missing from the shop. Since the streak of coincidences hasn't stopped, a group of men covered from head to toe in ash and soot entered The Hung Rabbit. After questioning them we found out that they just came from Lara's workshop who had caught fire. Lara was fine, in fact she went sprinting towards and through the Swamp Gate as quick as she could for unknown reason.
Long story short: the shop was half burnt, most of the hides and leather armors were still in one piece, however the T-rex hide was nowhere to be seen; reason: either it was stolen and the explosion was a distraction, or Lara was doing some sort of magical enhancement to the armor that may have backfired thus consuming the leather. We followed the tracks left by Lara through the bog and after about an hour we find Lara in the middle of a clearing clutching a T-rex hide. I became suspicious as we heard her saying "Where are they? Shit! I need to find them!". 'Find who? - I thought - Was she planning on stealing the hide and give it to someone else? Lara didn't pay for the leather since Levuka commissioned her to make an armor out of it. And T-rex hide is in no way easy to find.' My suspicion started to drop after she let us on a enhancing technique that involved a flaming skull spitting its flame on the leather with some sort of giant live bats on it. Apparently, as Lara tried this in her workshop, one particular nasty skull blew up and set the shop ablaze. She then followed them with the hide in hand to try and recreate the experiment. Her braid was puffed, her clothes were half charred and covered in soot, her face was tired and her tone was a combination of annoyance, desperation and disappointment. I managed to convince her to hand the hide over to us and to proceed back to her workshop (what remains of it).
After an annoyingly long and boring 3-4 hours of trailing the skulls and bats, we find them, I managed to get a face full of fireball and Levuka unleashed an army of pixies that put the bats to sleep and polymorphed the skulls. To proceed with the ritual of enhancing the T-rex hide, we use Kavel as the test subject (he's a barbarian, he's fine). We put the hid on him, strap the bats and then Levuka commander her pixies to stop the polymorph, thus releasing the skulls and, with no hesitation, proceeded to set Kavel alight. Kavel was fine afterwards, one of the skulls fled and the T-rex hid was successfully enhanced. Have to say, it looks really good.
We gave Lara the T-rex hide, to her amazement, we got payed and we went home.
All was good.
Until I reached the City Watch barracks.
A new name appeared on the "Fallen adventurers" list: Faust Greyheart.
I've only been with him once, during an expedition in Vorsthold. I cannot say that I felt much upon reading the name that appeared on the list, thus I cannot say that the loss has affected me greatly. However, I do feel a bit sadness. Not for me, but for a couple of other adventurers, Ivan and Felix. When I met them they seems like long-time friends, they have clearly been on numerous commissions together. Faust and Ivan even joked around about how the small and old tiefling would be carrying the tall and strong Ivan to safety.
~ I'll have to pay my respects later this week.
My week seemed that it wanted to make sure that it ended on a crappy note, since on my research in Daring Academy on the Yuan-Ti - Shadowfell portal not only did I not find much, but I've also ended up with a neat golden magnifying glass. Not bad at first. Until I felt something odd, like a constant magical presence. Upon using my detect magic I find out that this thing is looming with shadow magic.
Great, this blasted thing may be cursed. I hope this week will at least end on a better note.
Ongoing investigations:
Yuan-Ti and Shadowfell portal - current investigation - ongoing
Jack and the modrons - currently on hold at least until we receive more information; a hunting party has been sent out to find this Jack person - awaiting their report
Additional notes:
The previous adventure took place in New Hillsburrow which is also the home of Sam. And, to my surprise, Celina showed up... dressed in such a way as to avoid being recognized. This only confirmed my suspicion that she really does not want people to know about her relationship to Sam from some unknown reasons. She also immediately bolted out of the village the moment we were done with the commission.
Also, Tayz still had those eagle goggles from Celina, and when I asked him about them, he said that he got to keep them if he did a task for her. A task that he was not allowed to divulge.
My curiosity about this Celina is peaking.
