A letter delivered by hand alongside a map of Kantas with a big red X on it, is addressed to the First Secretary of the Daring Heights council:
Dear Philip,
It's been such a delight talking to you the other week. I wish we could speak on more pleasant topics, but I fear that once again, I am a bearer of bad news. I've heard that the manticore was dealt with. Although I am opposed to the method, I believe a similar effort might be required in the nearest future.
You see, I've traveled west in search of a rather rare magical creature: vain, loves gold and comfort, cares little about the gods of this world, and prefers others to do the footwork. And least you think I've traveled to the foothills of the Sunset Spine to look into a mirror, I'm telling you that I was after a Lamia. I've seen a couple back home in Zakhara, but that was before my scientific interest fully awoken, so I've got little understanding of these creatures. Myself and some fellow adventurers were promised to be shown a Lamia's lair by a group of refugees who allegedly suffered from her. I say 'allegedly' because they turned out to be jackalweres, Lamia's creations and servants. They were leading us into a trap, which backfired on them rather ironically. Suffice it to say a snare was involved!
Omitting the more traumatizing details, suffice it to say that my companions and I managed to persuade three of them, who were still left alive by the end of the ordeal, to change their ways. They have now joined the City Watch as guard dogs, or, to put it better, as dog-guards. I understand it must be hard to believe that such creatures can be redeemed. But I'm sure their ability to shape-shift will be invaluable for tracking criminals, and they will all make good investigators in due time. Believe me, mercy does miracles on peoples' characters. And Kristoph seems to be a decent person on his own…
However, I digress. The crux of the problem is – we've never found the Lamia. Moreover, we've either killed or stole away her servants. She will not be amused. I made a crude map of her location, based on the description Kristoph and others gave us. It appears to be a dilapidated tomb or crypt of some sort. A rather modest choice of habitation for a Lamia. I have no doubt she'll be after more prestigious property very shortly.
I hope you know how to address this new threat. I, for one, is off to Red House to give a small lecture on jackalweres, so that nobody else will be whisked away by Lamia should she make herself any new servants. Do keep me in the loop as to the new developments, I will be happy to assist in any way, save, perhaps, for killing the creature, which as you know, brings me no joy.
Kindest regards,
Your friend
