Rust In Pieces
Written by Celina Zabinski
I heard a rumour through the grapevine that someone was stealing metals, which are used to for the tuning forks to get from one place to the next. Sure enough an ad gets posted a few days later around the area looking for people to help out. I think to myself sure, this could be an exciting adventure. I decide to take the job.
I arrive to the black smith shop at 9am and meet a whole bunch of new people I’d never seen before. I think they must have heard about this ad as well. Introductions were made and I learn the names of my fellow adventurers, Derthaad (a dragonborn), Anwyn (another dragonborn), Yinmaris (an eladrin) and Tayz (an aarakocra). I learn that Yinmaris is from the Summer Court he takes a lot of notes on things and seems to be confused about the world, Anwyn is a mighty strong fighter silent but deadly but also they seem quite friendly, Tayz is from the Church of Horace he also likes to take out a notepad and make notes and Derthaard he works as an investigator for the city watch. Of course, I introduce myself as Celina and explain that I am just a humble apple shop keeper. I also mention I will just be quiet in the background, they'll hardly notice me. Some of them look confused as to why I'm here but but say no more.
At one point, Derthaard asks me if I know a Sam. Sam, that’s a Halfling. I immediately know he’s talking about Sammy. However I deny knowing a Sam or Sammy. Why should he know my business? I tell him that I meet a lot of people and I find it hard keeping track of names. Yinmaris and Anwyn agree that keeping track of names is hard. I like that they either have my back or generally forget names, works for me either way. However Derthaard doesn’t seem to buy my lie and he just stares at me. He sees straight through me. Like he knows I’m lying. I don't know what he knows. I avoid eye contact with him. I start to panic and start frantically thinking “Why does this person know me? What is Sammy telling people? First Glint and now this new person. Also this new person is from the freakin city watch. City Watch! Sammy has mentioned me, me specifically to someone from the City Watch. Has he reported me? Dammit I want to know, this could be bad. Does he want me arrested? I hate not knowing, Dammit, Dammit, Dammit!!!!”. I decide to be careful around this Derthaard person, this could mean trouble.
Eventually we get to meet Samed and I snap out of m y frantic thinking. I push that aside for now. He’s a half elven man, of average height and appears to be in his early 50’s or late 40’s. We introduce ourselves to him. Then Samed talks about the tuning forks and the metals which have gone missing. He brings us to the place he usually keeps the tuning forks and metals in his shop. When we get there, we can all see the door has no forced entry. Samed takes out a key, puts it in the door to unlock and the door swings open. It’s a smallish room, you wouldn’t want to be claustrophobic. Looking around we can all see shelves full of tuning forks. However none of them are labelled. Makes sense, if someone broke in you wouldn’t want them to know which ones go where. We all look around in the room but we can all see there’s nothing much there. Suddenly Derthaard says to Samed “I think I found the problem”. I look to him and can see he’s found a corner of the room that appears to be an illusion. Made to look like part of a wall but now the illusion is dropped and we can all see a small tunnel. It’s not big enough for any of us to go through. It appears to be Halfling or Goblin size, which none of us are. Derthaard and Yinmaris start discussing plans on how to get down this tunnel. Derthaard pulls out some box thing and suddenly a spider appears that he talks too. I guess it’s like his familiar. Anyway this thing goes through the tunnel and I guess tells Derthaad what it sees. I don’t know how familiars do that. I just observe as these people work and I suddenly I start thinking to myself “These people are going to solve the damn case and there’s been no talk of gold or a reward”. I immediately turn to Samed and say that he can clearly see we’re a very competent team. That we basically nearly close to getting the thing solved. So I quickly get down to business and ask how much are we getting paid for the job and also what does he need exactly from us. This seems to halt everyone in the room and everyone focuses on Samed for a moment. I flash a smile and see if there’s anything I can do to make this price even better for us. He agrees that he can pay us all 50 gold each. However mentions that he’ll dip into his personal savings if we can get the metal back and get some information on what’s happening. I smile pleased with this offer and agree. This also pleases everyone else in the room. Everyone gets back to work and Derthaard has some sort of plan.
We all head out and start following Derthaard lead, as he’s looking for his spider or something. To be honest, I start losing interest the longer we keep walking. The weather is miserable, it’s raining and it’s dull, I just don’t feel like my normal self. At one point Derthaard kindly offers me a drink of Pumpkin Spice Latte. I take it and enjoy it while the others discuss more plans and start heading to more locations. I walk in silence. I don’t need to help, they have it covered. I get distracted by the lovely hot beverage I am drinking.
We finally come to a forest entrance and out of the blue Yinmaris whispers “Boot Prints”. It’s at this point, I look down and see what Yinmaris is talking about in the ground. I suggest to Tayz why doesn’t he fly up high and see if he can see anything to help us further ahead. I also offer him some assistance with the 'Eye of the Eagle' googles I got. To be honest, I just wanted to see a bird wear eagle eyes. Tayz takes them and flies up high. I am amused with how he looks. Tayz amazingly guides us to where we need to go, the googles are clearly working and we come across a castle that was destroyed. Tayz lands on a wall and we all catch up to him. He quietly mentions that we’re not alone here and points to areas where he can spot movement.
We come across a Modron. I have flashes back to when I previously came across one of these creatures many weeks ago. The others all try to talk to this thing, Yinmaris even tries to befriend this modron but it appears to not react and starts making an alarm sound. Tayz immediately tries to shut it up with a spell but it misses. I quickly try to jump in and say 0 to the Modrone, like the last time we met them. All I can remember was that it speaks 0’s and 1’s. It seems to stare at me and adds more numbers back in response to me. I realise I am out of my depth so I give up. The alarm starts to get louder and then more of them appear, even a duodrone. I can see we aren’t getting anywhere with talking, so fighting it is. I quickly run up and stab the modron in the eye, which kills it instantly and send my dancing rapier to the duodrone which nearly slices it in half but it is still standing. It tries to retaliate but I quickly dodge out of the way, it barely scratches me. Then it flees around the corner out of the way. However Yinmaris runs after it and finishes it off. The rest of our group take on some of the other drones that appeared. I start to think that this is all going too easy. However I start to wonder how are we going to find the metals and get the extra reward if we can’t speak to them. Then all of a sudden, I hear a voice coming from Anwyn and Derthaad’s direction which says “Jack does not allow trespassers”. I have heard rumours of a Jack, that’s a hexadrone. Killed some queen. I put it together that this could possibly be the same Jack I’ve heard about. I quickly think of a plan and I race over to this mysterious voice. I immediately see this is a robot creature that’s more sophisticated than the other drones. I stand in front of it and tell this creature that Jack in fact sent us to come here, I throw my hands in the air to show I am not a threat. I also add that it’s typical Jack didn’t tell us that there would be other people here. That he usually leaves these details out, which is typical Jack. This creature looks straight at me processing, eventually it seems to believe my story. It nods and agrees my words make sense. It then says it can show me where we need to go. I learn this creature is a Nimblewright. I am pleased with how this progressed. I quickly look to the others and glare at them all to follow me. Eeryone follows along. We get to an area that has a portable portal in the centre all made out of junk metal, we can see this is where the metal is going. There’s more Nimblewrights and Modron’s around. However our Nimblewright communicates to the others that Jack has sent us, which they all believe and they don't try to attack us. Yinmaris tries to ask the Nimblewright if we can take the portal as the area is compromised. The Nimblewright immediately states they will initiate protocol for when they’re compromised. It thanks us and says it has communicated everything between that's happened to the others and to Jack. Then each drone begins to do a self-destruct sequence. Within seconds the portal disappears, the modron’s dissolve into dust and the nimblewrights collapse onto the ground. I glare to Yinmaris, who just looks completely shocked that what happened. “What did you do!!!”, I shout angrily. He looks shell-shocked for a moment and apologises to everyone.
I am so annoyed but decide to see if there’s anything salvable. Everyone looks around the area as well. Anwyn manages to find one tuning fork. Derthaard and Yinmaris take one of the hats from the Nimblewrights on the ground. I stare at the Nimblewright we were talking to and think there has to be more to this. It seems such a waste. Then I had another idea, I ask Anwyn if they’re strong enough to carry one of these things back to the Black Smith. They nod and say they can do it. I offer to give them apples along the way for energy. They happily accept this proposal. I just think bringing back one of these Nimblewright things is surely going to get us the full reward.
We make our way back and I give my apples to Anwyn when needed. At point point, it looks like Anwyn might collapse but luckily they just mange to make it back to the Black Smith carrying this Nimblewright. Samed is there when we arrive. Anwyn places the Nimblewright down and also hands over the tuning fork. Samed looks at us and immediately says “Let me guess Jack?”. We tell him our journey and what we found. He is pleased hearing all this information but also worried. He pays us all 75 gold pieces each. Mentions he needs to go talk to Aurelia or something. We all leave it there for the day and head off. However before I go Tayz asks me about whether we could do an exchange for the googles he had. I think for a moment about what I could possibly want. I smile, look at him and say sure I have just the thing you can help me with. Then I mention it’s best to discuss this in private. I head off to the nearest Tavern with Tayz.
