~excerpt from Derthaad's ledger
Week 40, 1498
8th of Marpenoth
I have decided to purchase this ledger to further document information of value that cannot, or will not, be communicated via an official report to the City Watch. Whilst some of the more important and/or urgent information that have, is, or will affect others have and will be officially transmitted to the City Watch supervisors, some of the more personal views and needs will be written here. Although I am not someone to have a constant need for such ledger, I felt that current events demand it.
Events that lead to the need of this ledger are as follows:
- First major event (week 34, 1498, 25th & 26th of Barrakas) that founded my current investigation took place in the Anglebark forest. It was a two-part investigation where the party and I, under the employment of Professor Tumblefoot have found a ruined Yuan-Ti temple. The temple was behind a swarm of Corpse Flowers and it housed what can only be described as a tear in reality - a possible portal to the Shadowfell. Although I was unsuccessful to snag one of the tablet, I was successful in making a crude copy of it from memory. It was enough to discern the name of a Yuan-Ti deity
~Merrshaulk.
The reasoning for this investigation is clear: whatever, or whomever, has created that portal may do the same again, and the effects of this may be felt closer than Bloody Creek.
- Second major event which will lead to a future investigation happened this week, on the 6th. The party and I took a job notice from the smith Samed which stated that some of his materials, mostly metals, were stolen. The smith told us that those metals were used in creating tuning forks required in the rituals of portal creation - portals to various planes. Upon investigating the vault an illusionary wall was discovered behind which was a small tunnel that went for miles. The tunnel lead SW, pointing to the ruins of an a castle that was here well before Daring Heights. The castle and its origins is of no importance, however its contents, or better yet its inhabitants, is what led me to write this ledger.
~ Modrons
For the record within this ledger, my sorcerer powers are that of the Clockwork Soul, power syphoned from the plane of Mechanus, the same plane that contains the Modrons.
Initially I was excited to meet the inhabitants of the plane Mechanus. But excitement was cut short as I learned that they only speak their language (modron?), at least these ones do. I was not initially deterred since I know that they embody Law and Order - they ARE Law and Order. But their order only seem to expand to the orders that were given to them. My knowledge is only that they follow of hierarchy, that they ONLY follow the orders of those directly above them in the hierarchy and nothing (be it magic or brute force) or no one (be it mortal or deity) can ever give them orders. However, what we discovered later seem to defy their natural Order. Upon engaging in combat against them, we were attacked by a mechanical swashbuckler that the smith has named it a 'Nimblewright'. I have never seen one, but only heard from my days growing up back on the main land. A Nimblewright is a magical construct with the appearance and attack pattern of a mechanical swashbuckler. Although clowckwork in appearance, it is NOT a modron, which means these were created by someone who is aligned with the modrons. Its creator was mentioned by the Nimblerwright itself.
~ Jack
Modrons and Jack
The only knowledge of note regarding both are of a modron named Jack (a hexadrone?) that has apparently assassinated one of the Queens from the fey wilds last year - a name that I only know how it's spoken but not written (the information didn't bother me at that time, thus I never looked into it further). It is this information that leads me to conduct an investigation in the future and find out what motive will the Modrons have in assassinating a fey queen. I know only that the fey may be chaotic at times due to their tendencies of making 'pranks', but would this be enough to oppose the Law and Order so much that it would require such drastic actions from the modrons? I feel like something is amiss here.
The party and I have managed to find ONE of the magical tuning forks. It was tuned to Arcadia and no other tuning fork nor the metal used in making of said tuning forks was found within the castle's perimeter. It is safe to assume that it was all sent to Arcadia.
The reasoning for this investigation is personal. I do acknowledge that this may affect more than just a few adventurers, which is why I have already debriefed this information to my superior, any further investigation will be for my personal benefit. If the City Watch will decide to aid in this or stand by will not affect my final decision. My Clockwork Soul affiliation is what's driving me.
This investigation, however, will have to be on hold until I complete my current one.
Ongoing investigation:
Origins and reason behind the Shadowfell portal in the abandoned Yuan-Ti temple within Anglebark forest.
Points of interest:
- Merrshaulk - researched
- Shadowfell and the Yuan-Ti's connection with it
- Yuan-Ti summoning rituals - planned for next research
Possible future investigations:
The event behind Jack and its modrons.
Points of interest:
- the modron named Jack
- the need for the tuning forks and their metal
- their link to Arcadia
Additional notes:
Celina - a shady apple vendor with a dancing blade; only person to possibly lie about themselves.
To put it into perspective, Ragtag has admitted at being on the wrong side of the law. He admitted this in the presence of an investigator for the City Watch.
May make for a possible future investigation
