A Late Night Walk
Spoken by Celina Zabinski
CW: Alcoholism
It's quite late in the evening. Celina is leaving the Cavernous Seashank tavern in Port Ffirst. Despite how grubby in appearance the place is she likes hanging out there. It's got a charm to her. She has a bottle of wine in her hand, nearly half finished. She's a little tipsy. She decides to do a little detour before heading back to her accommodation, she walks out to the harbour. She sits down at the pier in her usual spot. She comes to this spot every few weeks or so. But she hasn't in a while. She lets her legs dangle over the edge and she takes in the sea air. She likes this spot as it seems to be quiet and no one else is around this area at this time.
Celina takes a sip from her wine straight from the bottle and starts to talk out loud staring out into the waters at no particular spot "So Ludwig, it's been a while since I last spoke to you. I guess lots has changed". She pauses before saying "I'm married... kinda... maybe not anymore. God I don't even know how that even happened... or what's happening there. I've messed it up so much. I didn't even think... I was ready... to leave you behind. But clearly my subconscious is telling me something else. Who knows... He's very different from you.... For one he's a halfling and number two he's alive". Celina painfully laughs at her bad joke there and takes another sip from her drink before continuing "I miss you. But you're not here and I... I feel I needed to say goodbye to you... so I can... move on...". Celina frowns before saying "God do I even want that? I don't know... Maybe... Why is everything so confusing...?". She sighs and she takes another drink from her bottle.
Eventually she decides to lie completely down on the pier and stare up to the sky "If you were here, I'd tell you about my day. Like how I entered a sailing contest. I actually worked on a boat. You'd probably laugh. Actually wait, I would probably start from the beginning. So, I was drinking in the Cavernous Seashank yesterday with Kelne as per usual. We were told to ask for Captain Sharp at some point but the two of us got distracted chatting and doing dares around the tavern. She's hilarious, I love hanging out with her. After some time, I eventually spot Felix trying to put on a show on stage but everyone was too drunk to notice. I also spotted Breeze, who I hadn't seen in ages but he looked completely different from the last time I saw him. He had really funky looking hair. I only recognised his voice once he started talking. Came straight over to me. After some time, he explained the reason for the change is that he's no longer hiding from his past and he's just being himself". Celina laughs "God if only it were that simple for me... Go back to my old self. Ha, that would be interesting''. Celina pauses takes another sip of her drink and continues ''Anyway, there was also this really energetic water genasi that stood out as well. Seemed super enthusiastic about everything related to the water and sailing. Found out her name was Sabeline. Turns out her and everyone here I mentioned were also looking for Captain Sharp to enter the sail contest. We are pointed in his direction from the bartender and we come across a crowd of people. We find two tritons having an arm-wrestling contest. Once the match was done, we find out that Captain Sharp was one of the tritons there wrestling and his sister was the other one. She won and the group all leave with her. Captain Sharp introduces himself to us all. He likes to wear an eyepatch. He asks us all if we have any sailing experience. Our group doesn't have much, aside from Sabeline. In order to make up for this, I fashion myself a make shift eyepatch from a napkin and tell him I'm a pirate. I mean... how could I not have done that? Then he tells us the plan for tomorrow, that we're to meet back out at the docks in the morning. He likes to sail with novices so he can prove to his sister that he's amazing at sailing or something. I don't care either way, I just want the money. We all stay up chatting for a while. I ask Captain Sharp what I had to do in order to get an eyepatch like him. He says if we win the race tomorrow, he'll give me one. I can feel we're going to win and I am super excited for the eyepatch.
Next morning, we wake up fresh, we head to the port and find there's two boats there. 'The Fast' and 'The Furious'. Sounds like a joke I don't understand between the two. But the names sound catchy none the less. We're to e sailing on 'The Furious'. We get on and everyone gets a job. I am to be on deck running to change the sail. We take off and all I can say is Felix really knows his stuff. He's the captains second. Like Felix was barking orders left, right and center and all of us obeyed. We all wanted to win and his orders seemed reasonable. There were some rocky patches like when we came to a point where there were so many boats blocking our way. Everyone was queueing to get in. Sabeline actually sailed right through a part we wen't supposed too. Pretending to be a non-local, that was hilarious. Sabeline also had a magical anchor which held boats in place. She managed to use that on the 'The Fast' and we over took them. Kelne also turned into a whale near the end and we were going to use her to drag us towards the finish. However, something else started dragging our boat a different direction. Turns out it was another whale and only Kelne could talk to it. I lied to Kelne and told her to tell the whale that its owner was hurt and then it needed to go back to help them and to leave our boat alone. Kelne is usually to honest and nice to people. I felt bad making her lie to this creature. You probably wouldn't feel bad. Maybe in another time I wouldn't have felt bad either. But I.. didn't like it.. Ok. Don't judge me. Anyway, this whale somewhat buys this story and moves off. Kelne then moves our boat towards the finish line ad tad dah we all arrive into the harbor first.
We arrive back to land. Captain Sharp is pleased and pays us as expected. He also throws in an eye patch for me. Which I have in my bag now". Celine sits up, reaches into her bag pulls out the eyepatch and puts it on. "Arrr! I'm a pirate", Celina says doing her best pirate voice smiling afterwards. "This makes it all worth it... Anyway, after the race I apologised to Kelne for lying to her and I buy her some drinks. I hope I haven't wrecked that friendship... But we'll see. So that was my day. Life on the sea, lies and eyepatches".
Celina removes the eyepatch and puts it back into her bag. She stares out into the sea for a long time before lifting her bottle of wine into the air in for a toast "Goodbye Ludwig. I miss you! I hope you're at peace... wherever you are now". She drinks to this and sits in silence as she finishes off the rest of her bottle of wine. She eventually whispers "I won't forget you". When she feels ready, she eventually gets up from the pier and walks back to her accommodation for the night. Feeling for once at peace with saying a final goodbye to Ludwig.
