A letter, unsent and eventually crumpled in the bottom of Sabeline’s pack:
Dear Mother,
Having heard reports of missing young people, followed by a threatening message that came (as we learned) from a fey lord, I traveled for the first time to the Feywilds, to the Court of Fountains. It is a place both threatened and protected by the Heart of the Forest, the souls of the women this fey lord loved and then left behind. The Feywilds are fantastical, surreal and beautiful. I shouldn’t tell you this, but when we first arrived, I wanted desperately to stay. To study the people, the customs, the magics that they use--! Our guide warned me to be cautious, and I thought that I was. I danced with the Heart of the Forest, and gazed upon the most beautiful lagoon I have ever seen, and the most beautiful fey woman.
I hoped we could speak to her, instead of fighting for the lives of the people she had taken. I think it is unfair to say she took them: they came to her. They sought something, and she offered it-- only in the end, it was not what she had promised. We began to fight and were faring badly, and I wished to protect my companions, so I tried to bargain with her. The price: well, to stay. There, in the water, in the most glorious place I’d ever seen. She held out her hand to me, and I wanted, I almost [ink blot]
I don’t know if you remember that once when I was very little, out at sea, I asked you where Father went, and if he looked like me. You told me that you had always loved the sea, and I was the proof that the sea loved you back. And it loved both of us.
When I felt called by Oghma you told me that the gods loved me, too. That not everyone felt a calling, and I had to follow it. That’s all they were looking for. Something that called to them. Something bigger, something more. I could stay, and free them, and free my companions, but-- she would still be there, still lurking in the glowing waters, waiting to call to those who dare to seek.
So I took her hand and I ki-- [ink blot]
She is gone now. I think it was the right thing to do.
