CW: Alcoholism and Memory Loss
One day, Celina was carousing with some people in Daring Heights. She was used to the routine and she loved it. Buy some booze and go around sweet-talking people. Offer them alcohol and tell potential customers about her business. You win some, you lose some. People were just a number to her. The more people she chatted to and the more contacts she made the happier she was. Sometimes it was business and sometimes it was just for fun. It always made Celina happy.
This particular evening, Celina was beginning to feel tipsy when she spots a young and wide-eyed Halfling sitting at a bar enjoying a pint to himself. She watches him closely for a few minutes, trying to judge this person for a bit before she goes over to him. Her new target. She can already tell by his interactions with the bartender that he’s a bit shy, polite and kind to people. Also, she is not sure what it is but she thinks to herself he’s quite handsome looking… for a Halfling. Celina debates in her head if he’d be a good person to have as a contact… or someone fun to play with. She thinks that if she was to play with him she’d probably have to do a lot of the work. It’s fun toying with shy people as they’re usually not direct.
Celina isn’t yet sure what she wants, but decides to order a drink and goes over to him anyway. She sits next to him and says “Hi there. Care for some company? My name is Celina. Celina Zabinski”.
The Halfling flushes lightly for a moment and nervously turns to Celina. “Well lovely to meet you Miss Celina. M-my name is Sammy. Sammy Plumbstead”. He starts to blush again and then says “Please by all means take a seat. I would love some company. I don’t know many folks around these parts”.
Celina smiles happily. “Well, you can get to know me. I’m just your friendly Apple Shopkeeper. I wander around these parts selling my happy little apples. My shop is in Port Ffirst. ‘Appley Ever After’. Big shop. You can’t miss it. I’m just out exploring Daring Heights trying to find new customers. Maybe you would like to come to my shop sometime?”
Sammy looks towards Celina and relaxes a bit more after hearing of her charming apple shop. He smiles and says “I-I will definitely come by your shop when I’m in Port Ffirst next. Actually, maybe we could get into business or something. You see, I come from a farm. It’s quite successful actually. I was here on a mission to sell a load of produce. Maybe you’d like to buy some apples from us? Truth be told, I’m actually here on my first trip alone in this city. I got carried away with things and it got late so I decided to stay the night”.
Celina smiles happily towards Sammy, “I do believe this is something I could discuss with you again. I am always interested in new business partners for my shop. Supporting the local economy and all that”, she lies.
“Yeah I’d like that”, Sammy says. However, he can’t stop staring at Celina. He tries to makes eye contact with her every so often but he can’t hold it long enough and starts to go red in the face each time.
Celina sees this and knows she’s making him blush. She’s far too familiar with people like him. However, she’s always amused about how far she can push it. She flashes one of her biggest smiles and says “So tell me Sammy, what’s a small fellow like you staying oh-so late in these big scary parts? You know there are dangerous people here. Tieflings and all that”, Celina says teasingly with a grin towards him. Celina starts to fully take in Sammy. His hair, his face, his smile. It’s all charming.
Sammy nervously replies looking slightly nervous “D-dangerous people?” He then coughs and smiles a bit before saying “W-well are you a dangerous woman…? Because I think you are a b-bomb. A bombshell”. After he says those words he looks mortified and immediately says “Wait! I-I apologise for that Miss Celina. It’s just… well I ain’t seen a pretty lady such as yourself before and I am not sure what to say. My friend Billy told me that’s what you say to the ladies. You know… when you like them… his idea and… well I ain’t good at this stuff. I ain’t never seen a lady quite so beautiful. Your hair and smile could light up a room. I-I know I am only 18 years old and probably don’t got a shot with a lady like yourself. B-but I would l-like to take you out on a date sometime… if that… suited you?”, Sammy says nervously and goes bright red. He avoids eye contact and reaches for his drink and starts drinking to distract himself. He steals a quick glance towards Celina to see her response.
Sammy’s chat-up line completely catches Celina off guard and it makes her laugh unexpectedly. It was so bad, but also surprising from someone like him. She didn’t peg him as the type to be so forward and ask her out. She realises she may have misjudged him. Celina leans forward, intrigued, and smiles widely before replying “My-My mister. You flatter me”. She knows he’s just a mouse and she’s the cat. But there’s something sincere and honest by the way he speaks, it gets under her skin unexpectedly. She decides she’s curious as to where this will go and watches him intensely as he slowly finishes his drink.
When he finally put down his drink, she reaches out and puts her hand on his. She meets his eyes and smiles. Then she says “You think I’m pretty? So tell me… what else to do like about me? I am big on compliments… especially from handsome men". Then she grins widely and says "Also, tell me more about this date then… what type of things would we do?”
----
Celina wakes up the next morning to knocking on a door. Celina has no memory of what happened. This was becoming a regular occurrence for Celina. She thinks to herself she might have to cut back on the booze in future. However, she looks around the room and realises she’s not in her own place. She’s definitely not in her bed. As she looks around she also sees Sammy get up out of the bed and head towards the door. Celina hides under most of the covers. However she wants to figure out what’s happening. Sammy goes to opens the door a crack, he smiles happily and opens the door wider. In comes two housemaids, they both come in looking extremely happy. One of them says “Congratulations! You’re married. Oh this is so exciting” to Sammy. The other one says “Oh it’s been so long since we’ve had a newlywed couple stay at our little guest house before. Breakfast is on us”. They leave the hot food around the room and smile towards both Celina and Sammy. “A Tiefling and a Halfling. Oh how wonderful! Ok, bye now!”.
After they leave, Sammy turns towards Celina and says “Care for some breakfast, my new wife?”.
Celina goes to sit up in the bed and the hangover kicks in and she feels ill. “Oh god, how much did I drink last night?”, Celina says trying to remember. She looks up to Sammy and adds “Also what are you talking about? Oh wait…”, Celina’s composure begins to soften a bit as she says teasingly “Are you doing some scam to get us free food. I mean if so it’s a funny joke… didn’t think you had it in you to do that… or wait… was that my idea? Ha, I am smart”. Celina says completely relaxed. She wraps the bedsheets around her and wanders over towards the food.
Sammy laughs, ignores the food and says “Well… eh no, we are actually married. You know, as of yesterday. Also, I order us breakfast because I thought it would be a nice way to start the day. I wasn’t expecting them to give it to us for free. That was very kind of them”.
Celina laughs again and says “It’s ok the joke is over stop it. The maids are gone, we have the free food you don’t need to convince anyone that we’re married. God… could you imagine if we were married…” Celina laughs again goes to reach for one of the rashers and eats one using her hands.
Sammy looks at Celina and waits until she’s finished eating her food. He grabs one of her hands and says “But darling, we are married. It happened. You and I last night. Remember I started telling you, how I had never been with anyone. Let alone someone so beautiful like yourself. I said it would be better if we were married before… you know… anything were to happen. You joked about how funny it would be to get married then”.
Celina stares at him with a confused face. She has no memory of this. She starts to think to herself “Is Sammy telling the truth? Why would I have suggested marriage? Sure he’s handsome but…. Wait he must be rich? That’s it…. Right? Surely!” She is trying to figure out what her dunk self was up to. This is not what usually happens.
“Tell me Sammy, are you a rich man?”, Celina says questioningly.
“Rich?”, Sammy says and laughs then continues “No, not exactly. Us Plumbstead’s we aren’t exactly rich but we do well for ourselves. My family own the farm which will go to me one day but it gets us by. We’re rich in family and good friends. That’s what matters most to us”, Sammy says smiling happily with himself.
A flash of horror washes over Celina’s face but she refuses to show it to Sammy. She fakes a smile but she’s immediately panicked. She thinks “He’s not even rich. He’s kind. He’s generous. What the hell was I up to last night?”. Celina stares him down. She needs to work it out but none of this is making sense. Finally, after a few minutes, she says teasingly and she goes back to being playful. She wants to make it seem like she’s calm. She wants to turn the attention to him “So Sammy you are just the type of person who marries a stranger impulsively? You don’t even know me”. Then she goes to try and tease him “What do you think your family would say?”
Sammy smiles again, looks her straight in the eyes affectionately and says “You’re right. I would usually wait longer. But last night we talked for hours. Do you not remember? I feel I do know you. We talked about our hopes and dreams for the future. How you’d go back to using your old name Natalia. That we both want to get a puppy and have some children. How I wanted to own a bakery one day and make people happy with my delicious treats. Then you told me about your shop and how you’ve been tricking people. You said you like that people think you’re bad so they don’t pity you or think of you as your younger self. You also told me about that gang you’re hiding from, which scare you.
We then found a person who married us. We said some kind words to each other and I brought you back here. You know you don’t have to hide around me. I know you’re a good person. You just need help. I can help you now”. Sammy walks towards Celina and grabs her hand, interlocks their fingers and says “But it’s not a joke. We are married. I have a beautiful Tiefling wife and I am but your humble Halfling husband”. Sammy is beaming from ear to ear, completely infatuated. “Oh and my parents won’t care because they’ll see how happy we are. I can’t wait to introduce you”. Then kisses her on her hand and smiles brightly at her.
Horror slowly builds within Celina, and she feels physically sick as the truth sinks in. She’s confused as to how he knows so much. So much truth about her. Celina starts to panic. She’s shared way too much with him. Why the hell would she have done that? She has never let anyone get this far with her before. Not since Ludwig. She realises the only reason she might have done it is… if she… does she… could she possibly actually like Sammy? Celina feels far too vulnerable. The thought of all of this makes her feel exposed. Celina hasn’t wanted to admit her feelings ever. She hasn’t wanted anyone to get this close. She wants this whole thing to end immediately. She quickly thinks of a way to fix this. When finally she has an idea. It will be cruel, but it might just work.
Celina stares at the Halfling smiling happily up at her and flashes a menacing grin towards him. She knows this next part has to sound believable. She says confidently “So… we’re married then. My plan worked and you bought it. Ha, I can’t believe you fell for my nice girl routine. Are you that naive? Obviously I wanted you to confirm it. That you bought my story and you have. We're married. Ha a princess that needs saving…”, Celina says cruelly. She continues “I don’t need help. However, you might need some. I am legally part of your family, so I’m entitled to equal shares, right? I even told you Sammy, there are dangerous people around here” Celina lets go of his hand and stares down at him. “This is working out to be a good day after all”. Then she grabs another piece of rasher and eats it while staring at Sammy to gauge his reaction. She wonders if he will he buy it?
The pain in Sammy’s face is visible immediately. It appears to have worked. The colour drains from his face and he says nervously “T-that was just a trick to get my f-families fortune from the farm?”
Celina smiles happily in return at the fact he’s buying it. However looking into Sammy’s eyes this time, she feels the pain she’s causing. This doesn’t feel fun. This time she actually feels as bad as Sammy looks. Celina wants to get out of here immediately. She can’t stay here but she can’t break the rouse. She needs him to believe it. She quickly starts to put her clothes back on and picking up her things around the room. While she’s doing this she continues talking while avoiding eye contact with Sammy “Yup, you fell for it. You should be more careful in future. Who marries someone immediately? I saw you as someone gullible enough to fall for my charms, and surprise! We’re here”.
Celina finally has everything packed. She finally looks to Sammy again who looks like he’s about to cry. She heads to the door and before she leaves adds “Oh good luck getting us unmarried. I might consider it if you pay me a big fee. Have a nice day”. Celina quickly heads out the door unable to look at Sammy.
As Celina is leaving she can just make out Sammy trying to make one last attempt to talk to her “Wait! Miss Celina... is this another one of your tricks you were telling me about? I told you, you don’t have to hide anything from me”. But she’s gone. She’s left Sammy wondering everything about what just happened.
Celina knows she’d be laughing in this situation if it was a different time, different person. However thinking about it, she doesn’t want any part of Sammy’s farm. And for the first time, she doesn’t want any gold. No one can know she potentially married Sammy because she might actually have actually liked him and got swept up in feelings of being in love. Celina quickly makes her way away from where she is and gets her bearings. She recognises where she is and she walks quickly through the town towards her own accommodation. She avoids talking to everyone she comes across, walking swiftly. She gets into her accommodation and makes her way to her room.
Images of Sammy’s horrified face flash in her mind. She wanted him to see her as the villain. She couldn’t have him think of her as “nice”’. Nice is too dangerous. Nice is too vulnerable. She gets in and shuts the door behind her.
She starts to think… would she have been happy being with someone like Sammy? Who knew the truth and still wanted to help? Who still thought she was beautiful despite all of her lies? New images of what could have been with her and Sammy flash through her head. Maybe she could have been happy. She thinks of the destruction she may have just caused. She’s not sure what she has done but this time, she feels horrible. She falls back onto the door, drops down onto her knees. She allows the tears roll down her face as she begins to cry.
