The voyage was long but he would sneak up on deck at night and look at the stars. They changed slowly overhead as the journey dragged on - new constellations filling the sky. It felt like a greeting, a meeting of new friends. New faces welcoming him to a strange continent.
He arrived in the port town relieved. He bore no ill will towards the seas but beasts and dirt had always been his closest companions. Gigi sniffed curiously at the air from where she was perched on his shoulder. They called it Kantas - some sort of new continent. It seemed like a good fit.
The port town less so, however, and he quickly made his way west. Stood at a crossroads some 20 miles east he looked out across the rolling hills. In the distance further west was a town called Daring Heights, supposedly even bigger than Port Ffirst. Not very tempting. To the east someone had said he could find a fort - enormous and impressive, filled to the brim with adventurers but with a distinct lack of front doors. Slightly warmer but not quite what he had in mind. Gigi lifted her small pink nose to the southern winds. Wheat. Farms. Flowers. Yeah, that sounded nice.
New Hillborrow was small and almost sleepy in that deceptive way that small villages always are. The amount of gnomes alone promised a decent amount of fun to be had, be it drinking or pranking or planting. He was greeted with cheery waves and warm smiles in the tavern. No one looked at him strangely and one particularly old gnome even said he'd never seen a possum to cute as Gigi. As the sun set slowly over the quiet town, he walked slowly around the fields, taking deep breaths and filling his lungs with the sweet smell of flowers. From a bell tent in the middle of the flower fields a tall, blue firbolg gave him a happy wave before turning back to her plants.
He marked the constellations in the sky and returned to the Cat & Badger, tired and content. As he was heading up to his room a small hand on his elbow stopped him - a halfling with keen eyes and a quick smile at his side.
"Hi! Haven't seen you around before," she said, curious and kind.
"Uhm, yeah. Hi. I'm like, new."
"Welcome! I'm Jacinta," she replied, smile widening.
He couldn't help but smile back.
"Florian. Florian Abeia. And this is Gigi."
"She's adorable. But you look super tired, you should go to bed. Here, take this - traveling makes you hungry. You might need a midnight snack."
He looked down to find some sort bar wrapped in cheesecloth pressed into his hand.
"Goodnight, Florian! I'll see you around."
Yes. This would do very well.
