Something strange is happening here again, and I believe it's partly my fault. Again.
BB stands at the edge of her beloved flower fields in New Hillborrow, a deep hole in the earth at her feet. The edges are rough with chunks of the surrounding wild grass ripped up around it, seems whatever dug it was aggressively rushing the job.
This is definitely where I originally planted that large seed from Ulorian, but that went missing a while ago now. Doesn’t look like it’s come back to stay either.
She has a closer look at the immediate area, looking for any clues of why and what was happening, but all she could find were tracks of a large bird-like creature that meandered and disappeared into the forest.
With not much else to go off, she retreats to back to the large tent that is home for the night.
Over the next few days things get weirder. Residents wake up with food stores raided, each item with only one chunk missing. With each morning arrives news of a different ransacked pantry, again, all with just the one chunk gone. And then it moves on to the gardens and the crops, and each place BB sees the same bird-like footprints that have dragged in loose soil with it.
This isn’t stopping, whatever this is, and I’m afraid it’ll get worse. Time to nip this in the bud before it’s too late.
Missives on magpie wings are sent out, help asked from friends who coincidentally stopped by at the right time, and eventually Merla, Ghesh, Igrianne and Veridian all arrive at BB’s front tent flap.
The group makes their way to the animal sanctuary where Goosehiss resides, but they arrive to a place of high tension and painful silence, not the calming background sounds of playing animals that is usually found there.
The pit of worry in BB sinks further still when they spot the injured animals recovering nearby.
Goosehiss tells them how some of the animals were indeed attacked only just last night. Each receiving a singular bite, one particularly scared deer has a particularly large singular chunk missing out their flank.
Oh no….oh no it’s getting more curious, more hungry, more both? Either way this is really really bad. It might start attacking the residents at this rate.
Goosehiss insists the animals will be okay after a rest, and so their group fan out to investigate as best as they can. Ghesh and Igrainne find more of the weird bird-like tracks, but then Veridian finds an aloe goop nearby. Their suspicions that this is work of some sort of plant, or the very seed itself, grows and grows.
There’s discussion of whether there are particular intentions behind this all. Is this an act of Ulorian? Something involving Queen Titania? Is this seed just lashing out confused and afraid? They have more questions than answers, and with mentions of the archfey a weird tension settles around their group.
It’s soon after this that BB finally finds another clue, a strange flowery clue to be exact. The flower perpetually wiggles, which isn’t that strange, but the humanoid-like face it has certainly is. Igrainne manages to chat to it, getting continually frustrated at its pouting and sassy tones, but manages to find out that something called the Hopper made it. And that this Hopper is to be found further into the Feythorn.
I’m glad this flower wants to come along with us to find this Hopper, though I don’t think I’ve encountered a sassy flower before today. I’m hoping they can enjoy the peace of the flower fields.
Further into the woods they go, all on alert for something to pop out, or perhaps not. This flower? creature has seemingly only been out and about at night time so they should be safe for now. And with that in mind the group happen upon a clearing just as the sun begins to set around them. In the middle is a large hole, filled and surrounded with loose soil. On its edges are more of perpetually wiggling flowers, the same as the one currently wiggling in a small jar on BB’s hip.
They approach cautiously, Veridian’s little clay friend Paracelsus going right on top of the dirt hole. In the next breath a little hand bursts out and grabs their leg, trying to pull them under, but eventually they let go. Now woken up, a small plant creature of little arms and legs but a fuzzy rotund body with teeth emerges fully from the soil. It’s appearance is nothing BB has seen before, but it’s feet certainly match the tracks she’s been seeing in larders for the past couple of days.
Merla tries to talk with it while wearing a curious sunflower flask that she fishes out her haversack. It works in that Hopper listens to them, but noticing BB and Ghesh standing nearby it growls loudly.
It seems betrayed that Merla is with friends with me and Ghesh. Why does it see us specifically as foes? Is it defending Ulorian’s honour somehow? The seed was a gift from him after all. But then it recognises the sunflower mask, which is definitely Titania’s realm. Oh gosh this is confusing, I’m not used to flowers and plants being this angry at me.
Merla’s words don’t seem to work well enough, and Veridian’s illusionary Hoppers send it over the edge enough that Hopper’s jaw widens and widens before it leaps in for the attack impossibly fast.
In the flurry of attacks and extra large chomps BB tries to talk to Hopper more, but that only serves to catch their attention more than help, and so with one last blow Hopper drops to the floor. Cracked like an egg that bleeds green goo.
The wiggling flowers around the dirt hole have already disappeared, though the one on BB’s hip remains, but she’s more concerned with the remains of Hopper in front of her. Looking closely they’re all pretty certain that this is the seed that BB buried all those weeks ago, or at least the one they’ve been tracking all day.
I don’t know what you were given to me for, if there was a purpose at all. But it seemed like you were angry and confused at the world. I wish we had more time to maybe talk and figure it all out.
There’s a sadness to BB’s eyes as she continues to look down at what remains of Hopper, even as her friends escort her home to the flower fields afterwards.
