The tired Stripes is scooped out of his usual position in the badger bjorn on Wren’s back and placed gently on the floor in the corner of Fort Ettin’s library, next to a desk with a little fox in a purple bandana waiting under. Wren crouches down to carefully undo and pull off the chain shirt and red gambeson from Stripes, muttering something about “Was a stupid meeting after all, you didn’t miss out on anything” and “all logisitics, stopped paying attention after 5 seconds”. The chain shirt is deposited on the desk, next to some simple stationary and pen which Wren shortly to gets to work writing with. There’s a small stare from one of the academics of the placing of dirty armour on the table, but Wren just stares back, daring them to say anything. Nothing is and they get back to writing their report.
Beans turns a curious eye to Stripes and he shuffles over to sit with her under the desk, “Where did you get to? Wren was looking all over for you. I was waiting here for some time.”
Stripes plops his butt down on the floor, sneakily looks back to Wren to make sure their immersed in their writing, before pulling out five gold coins from his hidden stash amongst his fur.
“Adventuring of my very own you see, got paid just like the Talls do. I was even part of a temp team of individuals. There was Lil’ Beastie, the black cat we have met in passing before. Moose the Goose, someone who I believe to be just as ambitious as ourselves in acquiring stuff. Poppy, a lost goat who was almost puppy like in behaviour. Cleaver, a most timid chinchilla who spent most the time atop Ulthir. Ulthir is the gentle giant wolf who hangs with the gentle and actually giant Tall remember.”
Beans nods and sniffs the coins, they certainly smell real to her, “But who paid you and this lot? Was it one of the Talls that can speak to us?”
“Ah, no no. It was the highly magical Tapir, Braxgton, that lives here. He managed to stop a most glorious heist that myself, Moose and Beastie were pulling off and then asked us to help stop the Fort falling to pieces. Crumbling beneath us all!”
The last statement has Beans intrigued, coins forgotten she sits down with ears perked as she listens and says, “Is that what all the scary rumbling was about?”
“Yes indeed. There was four magic anchors that this Braxton mentioned, located in the four corners of the fort. One was missing, stolen. So the task was simple, steal the damn thing back.”
Beans nods but then looks a little sad, ear turning down.
“I missed out on stealing practice?”
Stripes snuffles at her side in response “In time, in time. There’s always more stealing in the future, don’t you worry. Now! We went to three of the corners finding three wary animal guardians still defending their anchors, until we visited the north west corner to find a sad Almiraj with no anchor. Now at this point the team brought together their many strengths to continue the search. Ulfir with his keen nose, myself fully focused through the power of shinies to investigate, so as to find the culprit. A monkey.”
Stripes steels himself, obviously getting into the story recounting and being as dramatic as a badger under a desk can be.
“At this point Poppy leaped up the side of the main tower, walking up on the smallest ledges possible. Cleaver floating up to keep eyes on the culprit, I don’t know how, don’t ask. Moose brandishing her sharpened butter knife high in her beak. Then Beastie ascending the wall herself to arrive at the same sill as the monkey, claws out at the ready. Caught and trapped this monkey immediately gave up in the face of our amazing team and tossed the anchor, a ring, to its rightful place on the Almiraj’s horn.”
“So you did it? Saved the day with stealing?”
“Yes my sister we certainly did. Though the culprit gave up the goods themselves, but I think Wren would certainly have been proud anyway.”
By this point Stripes waddles over to Beans, to lay down at her side on the floor.
“But after such a day, I think a nap is in good order.”
Beans says nothing, but fully lies down too, curling her body round Stripes with some shuffling around till a comfortable cuddle pile has been formed.
As a sleepy afterthought, Stripes voices out loud (but quietly) “I do hope Poppy and Cleaver found their news Talls okay.”
Some time later Wren peeks under the desk after they’ve finished their report. The quiet noises of Stripes and Beans stopped some time ago, and quite frankly they’re worried the two of them have wandered into trouble. But reassuringly they’re greeted with the sight of Stripes and Beans both fast asleep, Stripes’ bandana slightly askew and Beans softly snoring. No one may see it, but Wren gives a most heartfelt smile at the sight.
