My beloved Margret,
My knowledge of the dawnlands continues to grow apace. Having ventured far and wide however it appears I have overlooked a local gem; the sleepy and wholesome village of New Hillborrow. Where the hustle and bustle of the larger towns occasionally leave me feeling tired and worn out by the end of the day, the comparatively sedate little hamlet left me feeling quite energised. Seemingly inhabited by those who have cracked the secret to living simple and happy lives this place is a haven for those who love nature and its most beautiful aspects.
Having enjoyed an early morning cup of coffee in the Heath and Road. I met with some of my new friends to help out a lady on the edge of town who was looking to win a Gourd decorating competition. Osborin whom I met in the feywild, Ivan who ventured with me to the mountains and Felix and Dwirihian whom I have had the pleasure of accompanying on several adventures. I also met mighty Carnan, stood a full 8ft tall, this gentle firbolg made me feel as the halflings and gnomes of New Hillborrow must when they look at me. A useful lesson in how even the most gentle can appear threatening when that much larger. I must ensure not to come across as such when I meet the smaller folk in future.
Having met our employer, we had a cup of tea outside her home (Carnan wouldn’t fit inside). Sat in her wonderful garden of gourds she explained her desire to utilise a new pigment in her creations. One derived from the Prismatic Ivy that grows not far from the town. A pale white ivy that grows in a hazardous area, hence the need for our services. As we set out to find and retrieve this wondrous plant, Carnan turned and spoke to a wolf that had been following him. I hadn’t noticed it previously but luckily I realised that this was a pet or companion of his and did not need to reach for my copy of the Kantas Gazette to deter an attack.
Osborin led us into the woods and in short order we found the fog wreathed pond that had been described to us. From its shrouded edge we saw a pair of pointed and icy faces. They spoke in a language I didn’t understand, Ivan didn’t wait to find out their intentions and began an all out assault. Confident that my friends could handle the fight and with the memory of the wolf from earlier floating in the back of my mind I attempted a something new. Reaching out I magically contacted Wren (you remember Wren, had a badger and fox called Stripes and Beans?). It worked and although the reply was a little confused I am very excited to use this to speak to all the lovely people I’ve met recently. I might even see if I can reach out to some of our friends in the Greycloak mountains and ask after them. Instant communication across vast distances! What a time to be alive.
Returning my focus back to the battle it has become clear that the little faces were not our main threat, with the fog on the water cleared, a huge salamander like creature was savaging Ivan and Felix. My friends got the best of it though and it fled underground.
In the pause after the battle, we noticed a great many eyes peering from the trees. Small and nervous we convinced this community of Boggles we were no threat, despite driving away the ‘Icy Spicy’ that they had apparently been using as a deterrence to keep others away. They offered to help us find the ivy we sought. All they wished in exchange was some light entertainment. Putting our heads together we came up with an eclectic mix of performances for them, Ivan juggling his axes, Carnan becoming a rabbit for the children to chase. Felix, Dwirihian and I using our story telling skills. Osborin seemed most successful however, simple standing nearby and hurling insulting at us as we performed. The Boggles found this highly amusing, I remain unsure as to whether he was being earnest. I do hope he didn’t mean what he said.
Content that we had played our part our hosts returned with the Ivy. I promised I would reach out to Arif (their leader or spokesperson) using this new magic of mine and check that the ‘Icy Spicy’ had returned and they felt safe once more. Back in the glorious gourd garden of Pin, we received a significant sum of gold. I do hope to be able to attend the actual judging of the competition on Port Ffirst and see what she has done with this new pigment in a few months time.
I remain yours, always.
