When the night is darkest and Daring Heights is asleep, Igrainne went to kneel in front of the wooden spider statue in the yard of The Hung Rabbit Inn. She raised both hands to the level of her face, palms turned inward. There was a pause of hesitation before she murmured out loud in Drowic.
“I know better than to beg you for protection. Um, I can defend myself as well as any other drow...even though I am a little bit scared. Uh...”
She swallowed and steadied her breath.
“I ask you to grant me the cunning to hunt and the strength to kill,” the ranger whispered. “If I succeed, I shall offer my prey, this son of the Feywild, to you.”
She prostrated herself before the statue. She did not know how long she laid there on the ground before she felt Octavia softly nudging her side. Igrainne stood up and pet her companion on the head.
“I’m done. Let’s go to bed.”
