“See that this is sent by courier to Amn. Appearances matter.”
He steeples his fingers and smiles, looking out over the rows and rows of desks in the banking hall and their attendant clerks, all piled high with ledgers, deeds of obligation, letters of credit, promissory notes, contracts - wealth, dreams and lies captured on patient paper.

Dear Viscount Daffles,
Good business and good health to you. It has come to my attention that your recent business ventures have not been blessed with success, and that you were considering to leverage what remains of your reputation to recover certain assets in the city of Daring Heights, Dawnlands. As you have been no doubt informed by our representative Master Mace, the Merchant Bank of Port Ffirst has a vested interest in maintaining stability in the local markets, and your sudden appearance and pressing of ownership claims of dubious provenance would very much have been to the detriment of a secure business environment, even though the effort would most likely have stalled and failed. The involvement of Unseelie Fey, although unknown to you at the time, could have destroyed what remains of the goodwill the business community still harbors for you and the vision you displayed when you began the frontier venture now commonly known as Kantas.
That being said, I fully appreciate the difficult position you find yourself in, and I admire the tenacity and resolve you have displayed to maintain your standing in Amn, and safeguard your legacy. The foresight you demonstrated when you conceived of the establishment of Daring Heights in these new lands was and remains impressive, recent misfortune notwithstanding. It is by the hard choices a man makes that he is judged by his peers. Do not tarnish this legacy in a futile effort at relevance in a place you have left behind years ago. Your reappearance in Kantas would destabilize all you have built. Let me help you instead.
Enclosed you will find a letter of credit from the Banking House of Teneveer & d’Argent - Merchant Bank of Port Ffirst, convertible at every reputable banking hall in Athkatla. Conversion stipulates acceptance of our terms:
Should you wish to discuss this offer further, please do not hesitate to contact Master Mace, managing director, at our head office in Port Ffirst.
Time waits for no man, Viscount Daffles. But you can benefit from it’s tides when you deftly grab on to an opportunity as it presents itself. Do not miss this one.
Sincerely,
Parvenu d’Argent, Lord Mercantile of Waterdeep
Chairman, Merchant Bank of Port Ffirst

Menace puts the finishing flourish to the signature of his assumed identity and dries the ink with sand on the expensive cream-colored parchment, embossed with the symbol of the Merchant Bank. He hands the letter to his young assistant Carl, now dressed in the simple, yet elegant black robes of a clerk of the bank.
“Lets see if we can’t buy those claims on Daring for coppers on the thaler from a man desperate for recognition…”
