My beloved Margret,
I write to you as I sit in the great hall of Fort Ettin resplendent in my new smoking jacket. I spent the week in Port Ffirst looking for a good reputable tailor. Finding a chap whose skills and style matched my goal. I stood for an initial fitting and as with any good tailor, he asked that I return a few days later for secondary fittings, confirmation of fabrics and details. This left me with some time in Port Ffirst. After enjoying a mug of tea in the Flourish Hook and the sun on my back as I stared out to sea I settled in for the night. Awaking the next morning I decided to look for some work.
Finding a notice on a local jobs board I saw that a Captain Galliant was seeking assistance in keeping a known criminal secure in the jail until he could be moved to trial in Waterdeep. Keeping the people of Port Ffirst safe from such a thief seemed like a good deed and promised a little coin that I could use to pay this tailor. Arriving at the guardhouse, I met a slightly odd and very excitable human named Simon. He was very taken with my 'fiendish heritage' and even more so with the arrival of both Sister Kalugina and a second Aasimar named Jonah Dawnforge. Simon, in his enthusiasm started sniffing them. I momentarily wondered if he had caught the scent of my sandalwood aftershave but apparently he wanted to know what Aasimar smelled of for his 'research'. The two took it with relative grace. The wonderful Varga then arrived grinning as usual and festooned with her many axes. She ignored the two newer individuals but greeted myself and Sister Kalugina warmly.
Entering the guardhouse we located a single and very stressed half orc named Ootine. Not only was she attempting to keep a master thief contained within his cell but the rest of her team were absent. Ootine gave us directions to the cell and told us that a 15 strong guard would arrive in the evening to escort Bell Ring (the thief) to a teleportation circle that would move us all to Waterdeep and his scheduled trial. We descended the stairs, found the cell and encountered our first problem. Bell Ring did not appear to be within. Things had not started well.
After several escalating efforts to prove or disprove the existence of Bell Ring within the cell and an odd explanation from Simon about a thought experiment called 'Schrodinger's Imp' that implied he might be both in and absent from the cell, we alerted Ootine to the issue (but I feel wisely did not mention the thought experiment). If she appeared stressed before, it was nothing compared to her reaction to this news. Sister Velania smoothed things over but Ootine remained alone and unable to leave the guardhouse unoccupied. We concluded that we should seek her 2 colleagues; Jum, whom had not turned up for work and Alkas, who had gone to investigate Bell Ring's room in the Cavernous Seashank tavern and not returned. Varga led us down the Old Town road. It was so muddy I wished I had taken a horse.
We arrived at the accommodation of Jum, a rather shabby establishment that made me reflect that perhaps the guards should be paid a little more. Finding his door to be locked tight and no answer to our knocking. A flash of nostalgia hit me but before I had gotten more than a couple of sentences into re-telling a tale about a door I encountered long ago, Varga had already put her shoulder to the door and knocked it clean off its hinges! We found Jum in a crumpled heap on the floor, despite Varga's predictions, he was in fact alive. Sister Velania woke him as Simon looked around to see if anything had been stolen.
Waking groggily, Jum was not happy about the door, nor that he had been attacked. He grabbed his armour and sword and left to find Ootine. I quietly placed 5gp on his desk to pay for the door and as we departed Varga lifted it back into place. Seeking Alkas, we headed to the tavern. Entering took me right back to our rebellious youth; sawdust on the floor, low lighting and a sour vinegary smell in the air. The barkeep (Jedd) seemed unfazed by Simon's magics as he turned every flame in the room blue. He was however happy enough to sell us some drinks. Jonah; finding the slightly lumpy beer unappealing threw the contents of his mug over his shoulder and onto the floor. Jedd was oblivious. He directed us the room that Alkas asked about earlier in the day. Approaching, Varga was upset to find the door unlocked and thus there being no need of her mighty shoulders to open it.
We entered the room but the door swung shut and locked behind us. Bell Ring is clearly a fan of traps and meticulously careful in covering his tracks. We began cautiously looking around the room. Finding clues and mostly avoiding anything that might have harmed us. We found and read two books; one Sister Velania concluded that it was the diary of someone who was 'not living their best life'... and the second made it clear that Bell Ring wished to steal something from a warehouse in the Tri-Tooth Wharf.
Seeing soot on the floor around the fireplace, I glanced inside and up the flue I found a package. Taking my time to extract it I heard Jonah yell 'Someone's forgotten to trim their bush!'. Thinking him most crude I resolved to ignore such comments but as I turned around I saw Varga and Jonah stood at the wardrobe, flailing around with their weapons. Long thick vines were protruding from the wardrobe and striking back at my friends. They're both pretty capable fighters so I left them to it, sat down and began reading. As I looked up I saw Simon was flinging magical flames and Sister Kalugina had also added her holy might to the fight. Jonah had taken a grievous blow, so I carefully folded the notes once more and resolved to assist. Varga finished the fight moments later with a mighty swing of her axe, cleaving through the creature and embedding the weapon several inches into the wooden floor.
From the back of the wardrobe we pulled Alkas who had been held captive by the vines after an odd compulsion had overcome him; willing him into the wardrobe and the arms of its inhabitant. Reading over the notes in that package; we found them to be meticulous logs of the movements, habits and locations of the city watch. One note had different handwriting and implied that a member of the watch had turned coat and was helping Bell Ring! There was an unspecified item coming to Port Ffirst, a valuable one that Bell Ring seemingly wished to target. Finishing our search of the room we collected some coins, scrolls and a small vial of pale white liquid. We departed back to the guardhouse with Alkas to find out what we should do next, while Ootine was grateful for our help, she remained frustrated that Bell Ring had escaped. Brainstorming ideas, we concluded that perhaps Bell Ring had deliberately been caught in the first place. Although to what end we could not deduce.
Parting ways, I offered the team all the gold I had earned from the job in exchange for this vial of liquid which turned out to be a powerful magic solvent. No idea when it will come in handy but I have enough money to live comfortably for a while here now and the new adventurers could always put the gold to better use. Wishing my new compatriots well I returned to the tailors and the calm provided by a master craftsman at their trade. Selecting a lovely maroon velvet, a black shawl collar and some intricate detailing on the cuffs. I shall cut quite the figure from now on. And the double quilting on the inside will keep me warm in even the coldest evenings.
As I sit here in Fort Ettin, Coll is telling me about an aid mission in a far off land, it sounds like something I could help with. He did warn me that it might be a little more dangerous than I'm used to but I guess I must face such dangers if I am to help those less fortunate than I.
I remain yours, always.
